DC to Reintroduce Iconic Character as LGBT

Hot on the tail of President Obama’s support of gay marriage, DC Comics announced at a convention in London that they plan to reintroduce an iconic character as LGBT.

The DC Comics representatives made the statement at a comic conference in London. They said they will soon reintroduce one of their best known characters as LGBT. The folks at DC were prompted to make a change after President Obama’s historic endorsement of same-sex marriage earlier this month.

So who will it be? Wonder Woman? Superman? Green Lantern? Joy Behar’s comments aside, could it be Batman?

Who do you guys think would make a fabulous addition to the Justice League?

Further, what do you guys think about comic books taking the steps to incorporate openly LGBT characters/superheroes? Does it give kids a role model to look up to, or is it pandering at this point?

Not likely IMO, seeing as he’s such a huge hit with the straight male demographic, that might put a dent in their merch sales. I think the golden ‘trinity’ (Superman, Batman, Wonder Women), is pretty safe from any changes. They’re all seen as iconic representations of America and I don’t think D.C. is that brave. Although, personally, I would be so thrilled if it were Superman, because he’s always been the ‘boyscout’, was raised in Kansas (Hello, Dorothy!) by Christians, squeaky clean love life…

I’m thinking it’s Green Lantern, since his movie kind of flopped, so the next Lantern they bring in can try for a different demographic. Maybe Flash, that wouldn’t be bad.

If it turns out to be Bizzaro, because Superman is straight, so Bizzaro ‘Am gay’ I’ll be annoyed at the very least.

I’m kinda split on this issue. On one hand, I think it’s a great idea to put more LGBT heroes out there. On the other, I don’t like the idea of rebooting a straight character as gay any more than i would like it if Marvel rebooted Northstar as being straight. In fact, if that were to happen, the entire LGBT community (or at least the comic readers) would rise up against it, and who could blame them?

In the DC reboot they have changed characters age, race, gender, marital status, origin, etc… Why are we so self hating that we draw the line at orientation?

They aren’t rebooting anyone as gay. They are picking someone who being gay was already a possibility.

I identify with you, Brian. There should definitely be more LGBT — more minorities, actually — being represented through comics, good and evil. But I think that major comic publications should try to introduce *new minority characters, and not just rehash established ones in Alternate Universes. Where’s the creativity/innovation/progression in that?

Didn’t they already do the alternate reality thing with Spiderman? It would be stupid to do the same thing. To me, Batman coming out makes the most sense.

I think this is a great idea. There aren’t any ‘normal’ Gay role models for kids to look up to. Some may consider this pandering, but this is progress plain and simple. For too long society has been trying to rob the LGBT of positive role models that aren’t 100% negative stereotypes. I don’t know any flaming Gays, so it’s strange to me that all the portrayals of Gays in film and on TV are super Gay lisp monsters. Thanks DC!

DC will not change any of the Big 3 (Batman Superman Wonder Woman). They said “prominent” not “major”. So I am thinking either a sidekick or one of the secondary yet mainstream heroes. Tim Drake/Robin has a seriously hot bromance going with Superboy. It is within the realm of possibility.

Eh, Marvel’s character North star is actually getting married to his lover in June ’12 comic. DC’s Apollo and the Midnighter were married in 2002. i just don’t see why they just can’t make more comics of the already gay characters….

As long as it is logical, I am all for more gay, lesbian, etc. superheroes. (And read “Hero” by Perry Moore. Freaking awesome.) I think characters have great potential to evolve and adapt to the times, but don’t screw with who they are just to pander to a group of people. Making Superman black, for example doesn’t make any sense. Same as making Storm white.

I already bought the #50 and eagerly await its arrival. #51 will be next.

And in case anyone has the kind of pull (wink wink) I would love to see Wolverine give up on women after Jean cannot return his affections and decide he loves him some man meat. Yeah….
