‘The View’ Gals Awkwardly Announce Which X-Man is Getting Gay Married (Video)

***Update: Real talk, when I’m not gay blogging it up I have my nose buried in a comic book. Which is why I know that the current Robin, Damian Wayne is is fact Batman’s ten-year-old son. Yes, I know that Joy Behar doesn’t realize there have been five Robins. That’s kind of my point. The venues for both the story (Astonishing X-Men) and the announcement (The View) just hardly seem relevant. Now don’t ever question my fanboy wisdom again or I’ll have to put a hurtin’ on you. Smooch!

Whoopi and Joy awkwardly announced that longtime X-Man Northstar will be tying the knot with his boyfriend in next month’s Astonishing X-Men #51 on this morning’s broadcast of The View.

Which is appreciated for sure, but hardly the major earth-quaking announcement that Marvel has been building this up to be for the past two months. The View is hardly the most effective vessel for breaking superhero news, and Joy’s Batman & Robin joke only confirms this.

Also not helping matters is the fact that Astonishing X-Men, once the crown jewel of the entire Marvel line under the helm of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday, has long since stopped being relevant thanks to lackluster runs by Warren Ellis, Greg Pak and now Marjorie Liu.

So while this whole Northstar getting married thing is quite nice, it all sort of begs the question, “if a gay superhero marries his boyfriend in a comic that only 31,000 people are reading (an embarrassing #65 on the sales charts) and Joy Behar uses the announcement to make a pedophilia joke about Batman and his son, does anyone actually give a rat’s ass?

Rival publisher DC is already stealing Marvel’s gay thunder today with the leak that they’ll be ushering an alternate universe Superman out of the closet in the coming months.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m a diehard Marvel fan and pretty much the gay blog world Hulk, but this news is a total dud reeking of poorly executed PR move. The whole thing just seems so tremendously uncool.

In any case, congratulations to the newlyweds. Here’s hoping that Kyle doesn’t go all Women in Refrigerators and bite the dust before the end of Liu’s run.

I didn’t get any awkward out of that at all. I think it’s just a fabulous bit of news that the world of comic books is becoming more diverse. Most of the gamers and comic book “nerds” that I know tend to be fairly close-minded, just because they don’t expose themselves to much in the way of culture outside of the game or comic book (I say this as one of them, mind, so don’t get all offended!), so introducing it into their world is a great thing.

I really liked Whoopi’s comment about how there’s such an array of people like that. People of all colors, genders, and sexual orientation making the cover of a comic book might not be a big deal to some people, but it means a lot to others.

Also, since when is Robin Batman’s son, and how is that pedophilic at all? Robin’s age is never really specified in the comic books.

Edit: Actually, just looked it up. You’re referring to Damien Wayne, who is Robin and is his son, but he’s a fairly new addition to the DC Universe (appearing in 2006), whereas the rumors regarding Batman and Robin being lovers is decades old, which is what I think Beyer is referring to.

I’m with you, the rumors of Batman and Robin being lovers is older than I am. If Joy hasn’t read the newer comics (and I doubt she has,) she wouldn’t have known about Damien Wayne at all – she’s referring to Dick Grayson, the original Robin.

I don’t see marvel as”jumping on a band wagon” they have and have had multiple gay characters for quit a long time. Northstar has been out of the closet since the early 90′s

This announcement was nothing like what you described, Kevin. People have been making gay Batman and Robin jokes for years. Hell, this site even published an article on how Grant Morrison revealed that he thought the concept of Batman was “very, very gay.” Besides, Robin is — was, for he is Nightwing now — Batman’s sidekick, not his son.
I think the bad PR stems from the fact that someone assumes that “The View” viewers are comic book readers.

Well I care. I’m just now starting to read comics so I was definitely curious when I heard. Who knows, maybe they’ll gain more readers now. And honestly I don’t watch the view, my mom turned it on so I looked up when I heard xmen and left while the picture of the wedding was up. I’m sorry I missed the Batman joke.

I agree with you on this one….two months of hype that lead up to a bunch of ladies who clearly know nothing about comic books awkwardly divulging the secret that wasn’t a secret at all. ”This news is a total dud reeking of poorly executed PR move,” is spot on! And it’s weird to imagine all those X-Men coming together all lovey-dovey in the midst of internal strike amongst themselves and the Avengers….but I guess Astonishing has always been placed out of normally-timed continuity, so I will just stop being finicky…

I grew up with Northstar. I was a huge fan of the Alpha Flight series and I always knew he was like me even before I really knew what it meant to be gay. I was thrilled when they had him come out officially after years of doing everything but outright saying it. SO maybe it is a big PR stunt but *shrugs* I’m happy to hear it. I haven’t picked up a comic since the 90′s mind you, but still the news touches this old comic nerd’s heart.

Damn it. It just that I’m a cartoonist and always wanted to write Northstar as a terrorist creep (such is the history of the character, a violent Quebec separatist terrorist) and anti hero that marries the disciple of Dormammu, a new version of “Red RAVEN” (and have the two join the “Champions”, a team led by Dr. Doom).

Lol. Well That’s why I need to work on original stuff. Too many days in my misspent you imagining what I’d do with marvel characters. I’m still angry that when Northstar came out, it was in the worst comics i have ever read in my life.

My own Gay superhero has an appropriately Gay name “Sodomight!”, He has ‘ghost’ powers because his dead boyfriend hoped to continue the relationship beyond the grave, (creepy, I know). It will be online soon.

More visibility in mainstream comics is great…I’m just wondering why in all the LGBT couples in the marvel universe there aren’t same or similar (mutant/human being similar in species & genders) sex couples.
I.E.:
Shatterstar X Rictor : Shatterstar isn’t exactly human or mutant, he;s a biological entity from another demesion made up of genetic material that resembles a human/mutant male. While Rictor is a definitively male, although a mutant.

Wiccan X Hulkling : Wiccan is a male mutant as well, but hulkling while a case can be made for him being a Kree male is half Skrull which overides any possible static gender since they don’t have genders.

Xavin X Karolina : Karolina is an alien female (although given the example of her parents her species mate male to female), however Xavin is a Skrull who are again gender nuetral.

*Light Speed X Karolina : Might possibly start dating based on events in recent Avengers Academy series.

NorthStar X Kyle : Kyle is a human male. Northstar although listed as a Human Mutant on wikipedia is actually a “Fairy” or one of the Fey which are supernatural creatures who may or may not have genders similar to human/mutants and are definitly not the same species.

Anywasy, my point and i do have one, is that out of all the major marvel LGBT characters in long-term relationships none of them are with characters that can have said relationship be strictly defined as LGBT. I mean we’ve seen these characters date here and there LGBT-wise, but if LGBT relationships mean same species and gender then none of these meet that definition.

The characters themselves may identify as LGBT, but if you’re dating someone who isn’t even your species then you’re a LGBT “person” in an XENOPHILIAL relationship, NOT a LGBT relationship.

umm am i the only one who realizes that
1: batman and x-men are ran by two different comic book companies; batman is ran by dc comics and x-men is ran by marvel comics
2: this isn’t the first gay wedding perposal/announcement in the comic book world, if you look up the marvel character Wiccan he is a gay young avenger who is in a relationship with Hulkling. Also after his mother Scarlet Witch is gone forever he goes into a depressive state that Hulkling brings him out of by perposing to him. (Side note his original name was Asguardian however in the young avengers comic series, he changes it after a fellow avengers tells him it would be wise to avoid media harrassment by “tweaking” the name)

so my point is this isn’t the first nor will it be the last time we see this and i hope to see more in the near future
