Tyler Clementi’s Parents Reject Dharun Ravi’s Apology

Joseph and Jane Clementi have heard Dharun Ravi’s apology – which came a year and a half after their son’s death, and only after a judge rebuked him for never offering one, by the way – and they ain’t having it!

“As to the so-called ‘apology,’ it was, of course, no apology at all, but a public relations piece produced by Mr. Ravi’s advisers only after Judge Berman scolded Mr. Ravi in open court for his failure to have expressed a word of remorse or apology,” they said in a statement.

“A sincere apology is personal. Many people convicted of crimes address the victims and their families in court. Mr. Ravi was given that opportunity but chose to say nothing. His press release did not mention Tyler or our family, and it included no words of sincere remorse, compassion or responsibility for the pain he caused.”

The Clementis also said they were troubled by the judge’s decision not to impose jail time for the bias crimes for which Ravi was convicted.

To be completely frank, it’s almost refreshing to finally see someone involved in this case display some human emotion that we can actually relate to.

A comment I posted elsewhere: ”Mr. Ravi still seems to be in denial. It does not matter if he picked on Mr. Clementi because he was gay, shy, not socially adept, from a lower income bracket than Mr. Ravi, or all of the above. Mr. Ravi’s actions show a propensity for bullying those he perceives as weak or different, and basic to this is a belief in his own innate superiority. Isn’t that the very definition of bias? Mr. Ravi’s pattern of spying on Mr. Clementi and publicly denigrating him, that began well before their brief tenure as roommates, reflect a degree of intent, persistence and sophistication that rises well above being ‘childish.’ I have read that Mr. Ravi had declined to apologize earlier as he feared appearing insincere. If this rather evasive quasi-apology is the best that he can muster, then he has realized his own fears. He is a narcissistic sociopath and 30 days in jail is simply not enough.”"

It doesn’t really matter what we think. Their son is dead and they are entitled to feel as angry, bitter, and victimized as they probably do until they are served some sort of real justice. Even a sincere apology will never bring their son back, so how should a half-assed public apology excuse what happened to their son?

No, I don’t buy this apology for one second. This little slime saw nothing wrong with what he did at all. Bravo to the Clementis for speaking out!!

That’s not fair, though. Everyone makes mistakes. The Clementis’ reaction is colored heavily by their perspective.

Imagine, for a moment, that their son had been more like Mr. Ravi, and Mr. Ravi like Mr. Clementi, same circumstances. Would they continue to say that his apology was not heartfelt or that it was insincere?

I suggest that the Clementis are hurting–and they should be. But I suggest also that the Ravis are, as well. Were they in another position, they might be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps, they should do so, now.

Continuing a cycle of negativity will, necessarily, continue a cycle of negativity. To break it is the best move, I’d say.

I would like to agree with you, but I’ve read Ravi’s “apology”, and it’s like he found a book on apologies for any occasion and just spat it back out verbatim…. nothing personal or sincere about it, someone told him what to say and he said it, that’s it.

It’s their right to reject an insincere apology. Had Ravi shown any remorse at all, then they probably would have accepted it. I generally accept true remorse because it’s a sign that they learned from their actions and the consequences that followed. Ravi has not.

If the apology is prompted, then it’s just rote motion. It’s worth absofuckinglutely nothing.
