Queen Latifah and Tupac Walk Into a Gay Bar…

Queen Latifah and Tupac walk into a gay bar. Bartender says…wait, wait. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

Responding to those of you who interpreted her recent performance at Longbeach Pride as her much anticipated coming out, Queen Latifah’s got a few things to say.

A few things about that time she and Tupac went to a gay bar together.

“That definitely wasn’t the case,” she tells EW. “I’ve never dealt with the question of my personal life in public. It’s just not gonna happen.”

That said, the 42-year old was thrilled to participate in the event and even recalled an earlier performance for gay audiences. “To me, doing a gay pride show is one of the most fun things,” she says. “My first show that paid more than $10,000 was in a gay club on New Year’s Eve in San Francisco. Tupac happened to be in town, so he came to kick it with me. This was the early ’90s. And the boys were like, ‘Take your shirt off, Tupac!’ He wasn’t doing that. But we had a blast in there.”

Latifah gets a lot of shade tossed her way for not being open and honest about her alleged lesbianism and longtime partner Jeannette Jenkins, but I have to say she seems like a really fun lady.

Do you think Queen Latifah will ever come out? Does it even really matter at this point? Are we all jerks for talking about her sexuality when she has no intention of doing so herself?

For every positive role model who DOESN’T come out, that’s one less positive role model the gay community has…and we need them folks. Every major culture has a coming-of-age ritual. Hebrews have Bar/Bat-Mitzvahs, girls have Sweet 16′s(unless they are Hispanic and have Quinceneras), gays have coming out. I think we should stick with the mentality of seeing those who don’t come out as non-adults who are not willing to conquer their fears. While I understand everyone thinks they can’t come out because of X,Y,Z…everyone has an X,Y, and Z. I came out on a US Marine Base…overseas…with no support network…at 14…and this was BEFORE things like Will & Grace, Glee, and so on.

What’s your excuse Ms. Latifah?

Look. Society doesn’t expect you to come out as straight, why should anyone be forced to come out? She is still supporting the community while exercising her right privacy. I think Queen is amazing regardless of her public sexuality. She’s an adult and a human being and deserves the same respect as you and I deserve regarding her sexual preference. It isn’t her responsibility to support anyone so let us be grateful she is supporting the community at all.

I’m with SpectraStarShooter. The whole “Coming Out” phenomenon in the gay community WAS necessary in your time, when people were in dire need of seeing the actual existence of our orientation, but now, in my generation at least, it is not needed. I’m out to close family and close friends, but I don’t see a need to be overtly public about my sexuality. It’s none of anyone’s business.

And to imply that someone is MISSING something or is lacking in Maturity for not publicly coming out, puts YOU in the same boat as the homophobes who say homosexuals are lacking something in their moral fiber and their cognitive development, and is rather ignorant and immature on your part.

If Queen doesn’t want to come out, I applaud her. She still supports us. Why are we going to alienate an ally by being gossipy little bitches?

As long as she supports the gay community, It doesn’t matter if she is or isn’t gay herself. It would be nice if she would come out if she really was gay, but people have to understand that everyone has a different story and a different life then themselves, and she may have a good reason for not wanting to come out.

If Latifah doesn’t think it’s important, I don’t think we should. Why should we CARE? I don’t think she’s doing it for bad publicity; people would love her no matter what. I think she hasn’t clarified her preference because she wants to separate her professional and personal life, which is not uncommon among business people. The only difference here is if she said anything about it, her words would be everywhere. I don’t see why people need to obsess over performers’ personal lives any more than anyone else. I’ve never appreciated the media that butts into people’s private lives, especially unwanted and uninvited.

While I understand everyone’s opinions on the matter I must say that as an openly gay man who is dating someone that’s not out. I can understand how each individual is on their own journey and needs to be able to come out to the public and their community on their own terms. Shouldn’t we of all people give others in our community the same tolerance and support that we ourselves are trying to achieve from the straight community.

First of all, it really isn’t our place to talk about her sexuality especially when she has never nor will ever talk about it herself. I have always admired and loved Queen Latifah for her talent, personality and general don’t give a shit to really care what we all think about her personal life. I think that we invade way to much on celebrities private and personal space, just like with Princess Diana if the press weren’t chasing her and the royal family didn’t want her “out of the picture” then we would have never lost such a beautiful person.
