Minnesota Priest Bob Pierson Denounces Same-Sex Marriage Amendment

A same-sex marriage amendment is set to appear on the November ballot in Minnesota. If passed, the amendment will define marriage in the state constitution as between one man and one woman. While same-sex civil unions may remain intact, all that “separate but equal” business could become a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment in the North Star State.

Bob Pierson, a Minnesota priest, is speaking out against the amendment. Pierson argues there is no threat to the Catholic definition of marriage because civil marriage makes no requirements of the church. It’s nice to see that not all priests subscribe to the same “vales” as Gainesville Pastor Terry Jones.

” As Catholics we must follow our own conscience in making decisions such as how to vote. My conscience tells me to vote no on the amendment because I have yet to hear a convincing reason why we need such an amendment to our state constitution. In fact, I believe the church does not have the right to force its moral teaching on others outside the fold.”

Talk about practicing what you preach. Love thy neighbor, turn the other cheek and all that jazz, right? Believe what you want, but don’t use religion as an excuse for government-sponsored oppression – Props to you, Bob.
