Saturday’s ceremony in Salt Lake City drew Mormons from Utah, Arizona and Idaho. Participants gathered to sign a ‘Declaration of Independence from Mormonism’.

Those who resigned cited equal marriage, ‘racist’ or ‘sexist’ teachings and inconsistencies in doctrine on polygamy as reasons for leaving the faith. The mass ceremony is unusual, as Mormonism encourages a culture of obedience.

The church, which claims to have 14.4 million members around the world, is strongly politically opposed to equal marriage and has campaigned against the move in the US.

…will hardly be headline-worthy in just a few years time, I predict. The majority of the country no longer gives one single f#@k about the evils of homosexuality they were spoon fed as they grew up in their churches, whether Mormon, Catholic, or otherwise.

Within a decade it will be unthinkable not to insist on depriving LGBT Americans of their equality and humanity, but to cling to a faith that insists you do so.

Just wait and see.

In the meantime, many thanks to you brave former Mormons – do I smell a Rural Juror sequel in the works? – for making the right call and getting the heck out of Dodge!

how old were you when you came out and denounced mormonism? did the 2 things occur simultaneously, or were you out for a bit, then denounced?

I was 18 when I came out and 19 when I pretty much stopped believing in the church. I was questioning it before I ever came out more little reasons, but then when I came out I got treated so differently. It really started opening my eyes to all of the contradictions and hypocrisies of the church.

Yes. However in Utah it is now fact that Momonism is considerably down. 2011 State Census says that only 63% of the State of Utah are LDS and that 19.38% are or have family members that are LGBT. Soon my Partner of eight years and I will be calling each other HUSBAND. To heck with the fourty years I spent in a church that denounces and shuns who I am.. That’s why I am now Methodist…

That may be true, but its kind of a big deal for even this relatively small group to show everyone struggling with their faith’s baffling contradictions that leaving is a viable option, so hopefully we’ll either see more exoduses or a reversal by the church on their more primitive stances.

I applaud and appreciate their gesture, but I’m sure they know, as many outsiders do not, that once the LDS church baptizes someone, like the Catholic church, have you forever. In the eyes of the church, you are Mormon (or Catholic) forever – literally. They never really let you go. They kind of excommunicate you with their fingers crossed…..:-)

I would have never believed when I came out in 1985 that there would ever be a dialogue on a political level about homosexual rights and certainly not on a religious level. I am sure that many of those that rioted at the Stonewall never realized that their movement would spark more than allowing them the right to congregate together. Today’s youth have the torch to carry on what we started. We must be supportive and encouraging of the challenges they face.

I’m not sure why 150 people needed to go on a hike and make a big deal out of leaving the church. Maybe they wanted some attention. People leave the Catholic, Baptist, etc everyday so why is this such a big deal. I was inactive from the LDS church for 3 years. I never had any pressure from family and friends that I needed to go back to Church, but I’m glad that I made the decision to go back to church because I noticed that when I wasn’t going to church then I wasn’t very happy. Life seemed to be a lot harder. I now have a lot of peace in my life and I’m very happy because I have been going to church and living the principles of the gospel.
