WTF: Newly Married Lesbian Mary Cheney Donates to Romney Campaign

Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s lesbian daughter, Mary recently wed her longtime partner, Heather Poe, in a Washington, D.C. ceremony just three years into our sitting Democratic president’s first term.

Had her father, the Republican party at large, or Mitt Romney had it their way, this wedding would never had occurred. In fact, Mitt Romney has openly campaigned on the promise of making same-sex marriages such as Cheney and Poe’s illegal everywhere in the United States. Cheney owes her nuptials to the LGBT community and the Democrats. Period.

With that said, there simply is no excusing this:

What you’re seeing there is a $2,500 donation from Mary Cheney to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, the maximum allowed by an individual under current tax laws.

It’s just…I mean…the thing is…

What I’m thinking is that they’re not voting for Romney based on his gay sentiments, but rather, a myriad of things, such as fiscal policies, immigration, education, healthcare, etc. After all, gay or not, it would foolish to vote for president based on ONE issue–what if she wants him to be elected because if thought she disagrees with his feelings on gay marriage, she disagrees with Obama on so many other things–that her disagreement with Obama’s fiscal policies outweighs her disagreement with Romney’s social policies? I’m a democrat myself, but I’m just trying to be objective and give a fair reason as to why I think she might possibly be doing this. It’s not so black and white as “He’s Republican–he’s Democrat.” Republican doesn’t mean you have to take an anti-gay stance–look at Fred Karger. He’s Republican because he agrees with their policies on financial issues, state’s right, etc. but he also supports the gay agenda. And I get tired when I hear people say that there can’t be such a thing as a gay Republican. Just because the majority of the Republican party is full of bigots and homophobes, doesn’t mean that every Republican is. For these gay Republicans to go Democrat over ONE issue even though they disagree would be silly. For gay Republicans, it choosing to stand up to their party by fighting for their own beliefs while supporting what they do have in common. If a gay Republican has more in common with the Republican party than the Democratic partly, ultimately, position on gay marriage aside, it makes no sense to be on team Republican or Democrat for solely ONE issue. There are many reasons why I’m a Democrat–one being gay marriage–but it’s not the *only* reason and it shouldn’t be, because one shouldn’t neglect the rest of the party’s policies because they find one issue to latch onto. It’d be like the anti-abortionist aligning with the Republican party just because they hate abortion–while the Republicans have other platforms that this person strongly disagrees with. Doesn’t make sense. But it does make sense to align yourself to the party that represents the MAJORITY of your beliefs. No party can cater to the wants of every person. As a Democrat, there are some things I wish they wouldn’t do, but overall, I find them to be the party that best represents my beliefs. Sorry for the long-winded explanation, but I can understand why she probably chooses to fund Romney, and they most likely have to do with issues separate from his anti-gay marriage agenda. Just my 2 cents.

Absolutely correct about gay Republicans. Gay people are not just gay. That being said I think there has to be some self loathing to not just vote but support someone that has been clear about how he feels negatively about you as a gay person. I hope that if that idiot gets elected that every gay person that supported him loses everything they have gained in the last 4 years.
It is one thing if I lose my job and home because the economy goes bad. Eventually it will get better and I will get another job and home. If there are no laws to protect me from being fired because I am gay it will not matter how good the economy is it will be difficult for me to stay employed.
I wonder how many black people if allowed to vote would have voted for Jefferson Davis.

I definitely agree. I was just trying to feed into her potential perspective. She has different priorities. Perhaps she has chosen the right-winged priority of the economy, among other issues over her priority as a homosexual woman. She has every right to do so, but hopefully she is aware that she is simultaneously helping the people who oppose the legality of her marriage.

I agree, I wish they’d do away with the party system any ways, cause im sure alot of politicians are persuaded to think a ceartian way just because of what party they are on, and then on another note alot of people unfortuantly vote strictly for one party or the other with not really paying attention the issues, they just know they are a democrat or a republican and thats how they vote. its sad but i’ve known alot of people like that. so if they got rid of the parties and it was just a person themselves running representing no party ppl would be forced to pay more attention to the issues the represent, and hopefully more politicians would be more willing to form their own opinions on issues than just going with what the majority of their party wants

issue is to the person. I think that the author believes that because
“the majority of the Republican party is full of bigots and homophobes,”
and that Romney is indeed one of those people that Mary’s support for
HIS campaign is particularly offensive. as for the last grab at gay
repubs, as you said the majority of the party is bigoted homophobes. So
it seams rather ridiculous for a person to be a member of an
organization where the majority is against them and, and so will likely
use their political and social power to make that person and people
like them into second class citizens. It does not mater if not all of the
party hates gays, because there won’t be enough people who are ok with
gays to stop those that hate them.

Another thing to consider, at the time she made those donations the last word from Obama was that he didn’t support gay marriage either. People seem to have already forgotten that it was only a month ago that Obama announced his support for marriage equality. Regardless, like other people have said, social issues are not the only issues that are addressed by candidates and it is foolish to vote based on one issue. Everyone has their own opinion about what is best for our country and no one is 100% right.

There are a lot of times when I’ll say you can’t make something all about one issue. But sometimes a person’s views on one issue give you a good idea about their mindset. I heard the same thing about Chris Christie. Turned out, same sex couples wanting legal marriage were only a portion of the people he’s alienated.

And as far as I’m concerned, this is one of those issues where I’ll allow it to dictate my support. I certainly wouldn’t support a candidate who belonged to the KKK. And years ago, there wasn’t such a huge gap in the parties. But today, being gay and Republican is akin to being Jewish and having voted for Hitler with the excuse, “Well, yeah, the guy is a little anti-Semitic, but he has some great ideas about the economy.”

And for anyone who would say you can’t compare the two, I”m not comparing what did happen. But Germans voting for Hitler couldn’t have known what he would be. And gay people supporting candidates or a political party, whose official platform would keep them as second class citizens…well, they can’t know what they might become. In my eyes, all those who support bigotry and intolerance are passengers on the same train. Some just get off sooner than others.

Simply because Romney holds to antiquated notions about marriage being closely associated with biology rather than modern ones associating it to love and companionship, does not mean we should entirely abandon all reason, and vote, instead, for a corrupt fool who violates every principal of modern economic thought in his policies.

Melissa stated it best. As for those who think Romney is some evil dictator who will take away all of our rights as LGBT’s, now you know how we feel about Obama. As a republican who happens to be gay, I cannot find one reason to vote for Obama. His stance on our equality, while being helpful, will not change the outcome on marriage equality. The Supreme Court will have the matter before them when their term resumes at the end of the summer. Some very key lower court rulings need to be addressed as well as the DOMA. So voting for Obama based on social issues on our behalf, holds no water. He did not, would not and will not sign an Executive Order making marriage equality the law of the land. Our battle is now in the hands of the Supreme Court.
Way to go, Mary Cheney! Romney 2012!

You have to remember, for very wealthy, powerful republicans like Cheney, the things that the average gay person has to deal with don’t affect them. Money is the great equalizer. She’s never had to deal with having a hotel refuse her service, lose her job or housing or insurance or a country club refuse her entry. Even having a child is a walk in the park. Do you ever hear social conservatives blasting her or her father? Two women, getting married, having a baby…the daughter of the countries most infamous conservative? Not a peep. Her wealth and family name proceed her and pave the wave. When you’re rich and powerful enough, the problems of the masses don’t affect you.

What’s important to her is keeping her money and wielding power. She’s never, ever had to worry about her rights. She’s a Republican. She has a “right” to everything. For Republicans, gay or straight, it’s all about the money. Greed is number one on the list. Watch Fox. EVERY single issue is seen through the prism on who gets what and what it costs and how much will they have left over. EVERY issue. The environment, healthcare, the deficit, taxes….even arguing against marriage equality they talk about what it will cost. They talk a good story about “freedom,” but in the end it’s all about money and greed. Me, me, me….. What do you have, how can I get it or keep it for myself. My gay cousin is a billionaire. I asked how he could vote for a party who hates him. “Do you know how f-ing rich I am?!” More money than he can spend in ten lifetimes but it’s never enough. Definitely not enough to choose his personal integrity over.
