Ask the Herd: What Was the First Album You Ever Bought?

Some pals and I were chatting about the very first CD’s we had ever purchased in our lives recently, and the answers were absolutely charming, to say the least.

So riddle me this, gorgeous UB readers, what was the first album you ever bought? And what medium was it on – CD? Cassette? iTunes? Mini disc? 8-track? Vinyl?

I, Kevin Farrell, saw the sign (and it opened up my eyes).

Just so nobody is more embarrassed than me, I’ll start things off with the confession that my first buy was Ace of Base’s totally amazeballs album, The Sign. I was 12 or 13, I think, and man-oh-man did it not disappoint. The title track, Don’t Turn Around, Living in Danger (Bonus points for first generation Game Boy and gay priest plot in the video!) and child support anthem, All That She Wants on one album? I was in heaven!

Sadly, some pals and I listened to the album again one the 13 hour drive back to Seattle from Burning Man a year or two ago and singles aside, it did not age well.

The first album I ever bought was Kool and the Gang’s “The Hits: Reloaded” on CD. I bought it solely for “Celebration,” but whatevz. I feel like my music choices at age 12 could have been much worse.

Honestly, I think the first album I bought was Nirvana’s self-titled final album; the greatest hits one. Great CD.

I remember taping Bette Midler’s Wind Beneath My Wings off of the Radio. I wish I still had that tape because it would have my mother banging on the door for me to come eat dinner, and then me screaming that I was taping off the radio and she ruined it. Absolutely Priceless. haha I think however, my first purchase was either Depeche Mode, Music for the Masses or some Billy Joel album. They were definitely cassettes. All my records were handed down to me at the time. I used to run around this red velvet chair listening to macho man by the village people. Good Lord, I’m gay.

Here’s a two-fer: I got a record player for my 7th birthday and got to go buy what I wanted. I bought not 1 but 2 Shaun Cassidy albums (Born Late and Under Wraps), both of which I still own. Talk about not aging well.

My first album was The Source’s “Hip Hop Hits Vol. 2.” I had a fairly extensive CD and tape collection that I borrowed from my parents, but I remember really going out of my way to get this CD. I actually had my mom get it for me, because it had parental advisory. Money, power, respect!
