It may have been just. It may even have been necessary.
I think it was both.
It may even teach a lesson, and make the world better.

But don’t take joy in others’ misery, even though they may deserve it.

I would have gotten someone else to talk to this “passenger”, and tell her a few home truths – along with an offer of a seat if she sincerely apologised. But I can’t blame the gatekeeper for doing what he did. He had no real choice.

I’m in full agreeance.
The employee only did what he/she could do. No one should accept harassment of any form; employees and customers alike. And so the offending individual was rightfully denied passage on the plane. But this is no victory. Not for anyone. The author may have gotten some satisfaction, but it cannot last. The anger is still there. Hate begets hate, and so when we rebuke our brothers and sisters out of wrath and spite, rather than love and the hope to help them, we continue the cycle.

I am anything but a homophobe; a great deal of my very best friends are gay, and I’d never say or do anything to hurt them, or spite them, insult them, or in any way make them feel any less than anyone else — because they’re not. However, I can’t help remembering when I was in the third grade and my teacher, for reasons unbeknownst to both me and my mother, just didn’t like me. My mother usually ALWAYS took the side of the teachers when my sister or I got in trouble at school since she herself was a teacher and knew that usually it IS the kid’s fault, but in this case, she didn’t. She said herself — when she told me about this, which wasn’t until I was an adult — that she thought that my third-grade teacher had just, for some reason, disliked me, and that she had thought seriously of pulling me out of her classroom and putting me in another one. When I asked her why she didn’t, she said, “Because I felt that you were never too young to learn that at some time, somewhere along in life, you’re going to run across people who, for their own reasons that you can’t understand, just don’t like you. It’s going to happen at one point or another, and often the person who dislikes you is going to be someone with authority over you — a teacher, a camp counselor, a college dean, a boss — and you’re just going to have to learn to deal with that. You can’t come running to your mommy when you’re twenty-five years old and beg her to get you out of the situation; she can’t do that. And you can’t pull any kind of revenge-oriented guerilla tactics against them, either — not if this situation in some way pertains to your job and you want to keep it. You’re just going to have to figure out how to forge a working relationship with the person until you can find a way out of it, and you may never do that. Sometimes, you just have to put up with it the best you can and hold your head up.” She was right; there were other times in my life when I had to deal with someone who just didn’t like me, for one reason or another, and sometimes for NO reason that I could see, and I couldn’t engage in a war with them, or pull some kind of stunt that would allow me to “get back at them,” or run to my mommy and ask her to get me out of it. I had to figure out how to get along with them the best I could — sometimes it wasn’t easy, but it WAS best.

While I sympathize with the airline worker for the ignorant bigotry he had to endure, I don’t think his “revenge tactic” was the best way to handle the situation. Whether he liked the woman or not was immaterial; she was a customer, he was an airline worker, and, in that sense, she “had some authority” over him. He should have figured out a better way to handle the situation rather than simply taking it upon himself to avenge himself with her by leaving her stranded at the airport. If a business wants to STAY in business, you just can’t treat customers that way, no matter how offensive they are — and often, they ARE offensive. This woman certainly was — but she paid for that airline ticket, and it was his job to see that all paying customers made their flights on time to the best of his ability. While his vendetta may have made HIM feel better, I doubt that his boss was pleased to hear about the incident, and I’m not at all sure that he didn’t get into some kind of trouble for what he did. Perhaps he should have remembered the philosophies of Martin Luther King, who stood up before hundreds of thousands of his fellow African Americans — who CERTAINLY, in the ’50s and early-to-mid-60s, were the victims of prejudice and injustice, and told them that hate and revenge were not the answer; the answer was finding a peaceful solution to an age-old dilemma.

I was not in this person’s shoes, so I cannot say how the woman’s venomous slurs made him feel, but I can guess: it was probably a lot like the way I felt when I knew that my third-grade teacher didn’t like me, and I didn’t even know why. I was hurt; I was angry; I was frustrated — but she WAS my teacher, I WAS her student, and I had to make the best of that. I suppose I must have, because she didn’t flunk me — and I guess she could have had she wanted to. Perhaps the next time that this young man comes across a genuine homophobe who thinks nothing of hurling insults at him for his sexual preferences, it will be someone that he cannot seek vengeance against, and he won’t know how to handle it. I think it would behoove him to learn, before the next time rolls around. The “next time” could be the president of the company he works for — and jobs these days are too hard to come by to risk them by catering to an uncontrolled temper. Sometimes, some people are just not going to like you. Sometimes, you may need to learn to deal with that.

I work in a pizza shoppe as I go through college. Every day I have customers who are rude and sometimes downright violent in the way they treat me and my coworkers. You’re saying that I should let the customers pay for their food and then throw it away in front of them with delight in my eyes that they just wasted money?

Also, this guy was the gatekeeper so he didn’t get on the plane and fly away. He even said he watched her eyes fill with tears and the plane left. If anything he caused himself to have more time with this person who made him uncomfortable.

If you really think about it he was in a position of authority over her. If she really wanted to make her flight she should have thought of that before she opened her mouth and let her stupid flag fly. I work in customer service in a call center. As a part of the job we have to put up with rude people. At the same time there is only so much we’re expected to put up with. when the customer begins making personal attacks or using foul language we are fully permitted to terminate the call without resolving whatever issue they called with. People forget that just because you’re payed to provide a service doesn’t mean you’re required to be abused.

Katie is right on, along with the airline employee. People have to remember, this is NOT a right, you are not guaranteed the ability to fly in this country. It is a service granted you, by the owners of the business. ALL businesses reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. I work in the service industry, and if you disrespect my employees, or me, I WILL refuse service to you. I will refund your money and tell you to find a new business to work with. That is the right that the employer has. When you are working with a business, keep it professional, and not personal. Especially when you are the recipient of the service being provided. Okay, has it occurred to you that this man has probably spent the entirety of his life “just dealing” and that, perhaps, this was the very first time that he could exact his bloody revenge by inconveniencing this woman for a few hours. This woman who, based on her willingness to throw around hate-speech in public, has probably never had to suffer any repercussions for her treatment of other people. I understand your persecution in third grade does make you very much like Dr King, but do you think it would have behooved Rosa Parks to simply deal with the back of the bus? Seriously! You think it was okay for the passenger to hurl abusive slurs at the employee (gay or not) and that her deplorable behavior should be rewarded? I applaud his action, though not the way he posted about it. They take offenders of all kinds off of flights for many reasons. Maybe now she will think twice about causing harm and acting out so vulgarly. The customer is NOT always right…this is one more sign of “sense of entitlement” that doesn’t wash.

Oh, and my boss give us permission to hang up on abusive customers or he calls them back and lets them know their patronage is no longer wanted. We’d rather put our time, respect and effort into customers who deserve it.

Carolina, what would have been your suggestion for the flight attendant if he had been black and the ”customer” had used the “N” word — or Jewish and she called him something else just as derogatory? I can dare say that his superiors, themselves, probably would have had barred her from boarding. No employee should have to be shut up in an inescapable cabin for the duration of a flight and risk enduring the type of abuse that this woman was capable of continuing. Why is it, then, that a slur such as she used carries so much less weight than any other used in such a hateful manner? Just “dealing” with it is tantamount to saying that it is OK. It may seem messy, but actions such as his are necessary in the fight for civil rights!

There are some things that people do to each other, whether it is seen as retribution for refusing to accept abuse or a customer speaking her opinion. Being verbally ugly and using defamatory language is neither a gay or straight-specific attribute and neither is handling a work-related situation.

If you feel you have the freedom to speak your mind be prepared for the consequences of backing that up. Period.
In this case the United worker had the final say in this situation. If the woman had been unruly by saying pretty much ANYTHING, the airlines kind of have full authority to yank a customer’s ticket. Really, they do.

PS. On a personal note to Carolina, it is much braver a thing to speak up, even if you have a differing opinion. It is usually the weaker position to simply criticize or belittle another. THAT is what compelled me to write this here. Thank you for that.

I’m tired of the saying, “the customer is always right”. Yes, they paid their fare; for the flight and other amenities but that doesn’t give them right to insult any person. It’s that plain and simple. It’s all about civility. And about the severity of the passengers punishment, I think it’s well deserved.

Sorry, but your teacher did not cross the same line that the customer who called the employee a vulgar name did, so it’s not relevant. Had your teacher called you an offensive name, they certainly would have been fired.

I’ve had my fair share of customers who had a terrible day and just wanted someone to dump on. You can recognizs those customers because no matter how nice you try to be and no matter how sincerely you apologize they still can’t forgive you for making a mistake. You should have the confidence to be able to let the excessive complaining roll off your back, knowing that they’re the ones making the mistake (being irrational, rude, overreacting), not you. But when some harasses you with vicious words like “fa**ot” or “ni**er” you have every right to kick that customer out. Every business reserves the right to refuse service to anyone, especially customers the cross the line into vicious harassment.

Should the employee have taken pleasure in the aggressors tears? In my opinion, no. Refusing service is about refusing to compromise the respect you have for yourself, not about achieving some sort of petty revenge. But the employee had every right to refuse to serve the customer and send them packing, with the disclaimer that all airlines reserve the right to boot an aggressive or disruptive passenger from a flight with no refunds (it is in the terms you agree to). The person who sells a part of their own dignity and self-respect because they feel they cannot afford otherwise is of very poor confidence and only deluding themselves. You can always earn a living without having to give up your self-respect.

I disagree. the customer was wrong but the agent escalated the situation. His motivation was not to solve the problem. It was revenge. Two wrongs don’t make a right. He made the situation worse. Instead he should have called airport security and had them have a talk with her. again I think it was an opportunity to make her understand that he was a real person, a good person with feeling, a fair person. Instead he reinforced her negative opinion of how gay people are. Grounding her was far in excess of what she deserved. I will be disappointed in United if he does not get a write up on this.

the main problem with this argument is the “she is the customer and in AUTHORITY over you”. This is incorrect as just because she spent her money for this service does not put her in authority over the person providing the service. I understand your argument here, we all have to find a way to get along in the world, but I would add this, what the woman was doing was ‘bullying’ the flight keeper. She wanted to asert her position to someone she felt she could make smaller by her words. While there will always be bullies in the world, and we will always have to survive their actions, the lesson here should be for the ignorant passenger. When you purchase an airline ticket, you are consenting to following the sometimes very stringent rules put forth by TSA, Homeland Security, and the airlines themselves. You are agreeing that you will play nice long enough to get to your desired destination, you don’t have to like it, but you are required to behave. If the attendant had allowed that passenger on the plane, then that passenger found another person to be rude to, perhaps even a teen or someone not as able to stand up for themselves, then the consequences have the capacity to be even greater than just to one person. This passenger was allowed to grow up thinking its ok to be mean to others, obviously I would question their upbringing, but aside from that, some lessons (like the golden rule) just take longer than others. This person will not have changed her attitude toward gays in general, but she will undoubtedly learn that she has to play nice with everyone, regardless of her personal views. On that day, she picked the wrong victim, and her consequence was immediate. I don’t particularly care for flying anymore, but I know I have to follow the rules put forth to protect everyone, not just the attendants.

I disagree. It’s like the policy many business have that the customer is always right. No, the customer isn’t always right, but as long as businesses maintain that kind of policy, people will continue to get away with incorrect behavior. This woman didn’t have authority over the worker. She hired the company for its services and if she wasn’t going to be respectful of the people delivering those services, they had every right to refuse her service. In this case, the flight.

I suspect she will think twice in the future before opening her mouth like that again. And if she doesn’t, she may find she spends a great deal of time in airports waiting for another flight.

You should bear in mind that airline employees, unlike most other businesses, ALWAYS have authority over the customer. If you do not listen to them, you can end up IN JAIL. They are given a great deal of latitude and wiggle-room in dealing with passengers, in the name of airline safety.

The homophobic bigot of a customer should thank her lucky stars that he didn’t report her to the TSA as a security threat and preclude her from flying, period. She made it home, one a different flight.
Moral of the story: don’t eff with the airline crews. You could end up stranded or, in jail, or on a terrorist watch list (or even on Obama’s Kill Americans hit-list!)

Carolina – while I understand and appreciate what you are saying, However, there is a fine line between putting up with a rude, obnoxious passenger and being the subject of harassment or racial/homophobic/sexist slurs. The person that had the ticket had a right to an airplane seat that got them to their destination safely, period. The rest (great service, friendly crews, food, etc) is gravy these days. But the flight attendant in question also has rights. The right to come to work and not be be degraded for his sexuality. Think about it this way – if she had used a racial slur I doubt anyone would have told him to deal with or learn from it, etc. She would have been kicked off immediately, no questions asked. So while I think we absolutely have to learn to live with the people in our lives we may not agree with or who may not like us for whatever reason, I don’t think we have to subject ourselves to needless discrimination and harassment for it.

I disagree. Riding an airplane is not some kind of civil right; it’s a PRIVILEGE granted to customers by the airline. As such, the airline is well within its rights to demand civil behavior from those they CHOOSE to serve. I find it interesting that you choose to defend the assailant in this matter by calling the airline’s decision to leave him or her on the tarmac an act of “revenge” perpetrated by the employee as opposed to a “learning experience” for the bigot in the sense that sometimes, some people are just not going to like THEM. Seriously? You want to defend the customer’s actions in this case? Perhaps you missed the part that airlines, like other service industries, reserve the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. Certainly if businesses and organizations are able to exclude individuals from receiving goods/services based upon sexual orientation (real or perceived), then a business or organization must also be allowed to refuse the same to individuals for similar reasons.

perhaps the staff action was a bit too much in leaving the passenger stranded in the airport. being an airline staff too, ground handling, we faced lots of demanding or egoistic pax all the time. keeping cool is one thing, but to teach them that what they did is wrong is another matter. I can relate to the emotion he felt… i believe this is not a chance to get back at the passenger, but just showing there are some things that one just cannot get away with and would have to bear the consequences….
just an hour ago, my female colleague just had an incident with an egoistic Diplomat passport holder when she asked for another valid passport, he replied he doesnt have another passport. for info, his Diplomatic passport expires on 09AUG2012, his UN passport 31JUL2012. When she finally said, after calling the destination country and referring to me, that we might not be able to accept him on the flight. Then he produced his normal Austrian passport. My colleague was already tearing from the argument with him.
I then stepped in and asked him why he didnt produce the passport earlier than all this can be avoided. he simply said the Dip passport is still valid and he entered using it to this country. I reminded him the validity date but he still insisted its valid. I told him off, being a Diplomatic passport holder, he is still not excused from showing a valid passport. If he is not proud to show his own national passport then i feel sorry for him. He was taken aback and insisted to complaint which i gladly said please include that you refused to show your valid passport.
I wish i could have offloaded this pax too.

This makes me sad. not just the person calling the gatekeeper the name. how the gate keeper handled it was wrong too. By pulling them off the plane you did nothing but anger the person. They may not do it again but they didn’t learn anything and the probably have a worse view of Gay people. (this is assuming the gate keeper was in fact gay) He missed an opportunity to teach the girl that he is a good person that was hurt by the girls words. A good person that gives others a chance to learn from their mistakes, apologize, and get on with life a little better off. Now she probably believes she was right. That gay people are angry, mean, irrational, freaks! there is no remorse, no learning about people that are different than you.

well first I didn’t say that the act of posting the comments was a mean and vengeful act. I said posting it proved that he was mean and vengeful. He showed in that post that he did it to get revenge on the person. to punish them for f’ing with him. That is mean and vengeful. His post was immature and childish.

I was a passenger service gate supervisor for 14 years at CAL, and yes there were times I had to remove passengers from my flights for using abusive language at flight crews, other passengers and being drunk.

Paying the price of your ticket does not give you the right to abuse airline personnel or other passengers.

Carolina-You and your mom couldn’t be more wrong .It would have been your teachers job to make an environment in which all of her students could be comfortable and learn.You seem to have learned that if someone is not doing their job to an acceptable level you somehow benefit from enduring it.

When my nephew started first grade he suddenly became withdrawn. Then he started bringing home notes saying he could not do basic math or read at a first grade level. This baffled me because he had become interested in math at an early age and knew ,not only addition and subtraction ,but multiplication and division and had in fact one time sat and made a list of the first 100 prime numbers.
Also, after being read “The Hobbit ” every night at bed time he developed his reading skills to the point that he asked me one night if he could read “the Hobbit ” to me .I’m not saying it was a reading worthy of Alistair Cook but he did read an entire page to me.
So I went to his school and watched this 4 foot tall women threaten bully and berate her class of small children. They were forced to sit at attention at all times with their hands on the desk corners unless they were writing or holding a book. She began asking her students questions about yesterday’s lesson. When one boy answered incorrectly she berated him and made him stand in front of her class while wearing a sign saying “I am Stupid”.
I asked to talk to her in the hall.when we were outside I asked what she thought she was doing.”As you can see I maintain strict discipline.” she answered.
“If I EVER hear about you bullying my nephew-NO hold that_If I ever hear about you bullying ANY child like this again I will come down here and PERSONALLY drag you to the front of your own class and force you to wear a sign saying I AM AN IGNORANT BULLY. An don’t think banning me from your classroom will stop me because I know where you live.”I then walked to the principals office and told him that I knew people at the local paper and if he allowed this teacher to continue to abuse her students in this way I would not only go to the school board I would make sure it hit the newspaper.What your mother SHOULD have taught you is

It is time that the hairdressers, the florists, the shopkeepers, and the secretaries put the shoe on the other foot and say “no, we will not be insulted for doing our jobs”. If every “lavender collar” worker were to suddenly quit, we would put the world on notice. Sometimes Stonewall is necessary, and sometimes it’s just the one last thing that puts Rosa Parks on the bus. The long comment on MLK doesn’t seem to take into account that he got on a bus and thousands others did, and he sat down at a counter to be treated as “ordinary”. This woman did not treat him, as an agent, as ordinary, and that is simply no longer acceptable. “You don’t like me” is not an excuse to be rude. I’m trying to learn that every day.

It’s about time the “lavender” collar workers of the world united. It only takes one Rosa Parks to sit on a bus. What people want is to be treated as “ordinary” and being rude is not acceptable behavior by anyone. MLK did not put up with the behavior, he sat at lunch counters, he expected to be arrested for being “ordinary”. I cannot agree with Carolina, sometimes the little guy is in the place to make a difference and stand up to the bully. A customer cannot be allowed to be a bully. “Sometime in your life you may want to keep a job”. If that’s the cost, the job is not worth it. If every hairdresser, every florist, every service worker, every “invisible” GLBT person were to stop responding to rude behavior and stand up to the bullies, we’d have a changed world. I must respectfully disagree with Carolina’s assessment. Her experience does her a disservice by telling her never to stand up to authority which is being demeaning. The service worker was doing his job to ensure that others would not have to put up with rude behavior by an individual. BRAVO!

I worked as grounds crew for an airline, therefore I feel I have some insight here. Regardless of the situation, the slur, the intent, inappropriate or odd behavior is ALWAYS grounds for removing a customer from a flight. It is similar to the “we reserve the right to refuse service” signs that you sometimes see in businesses. In this time of hightened security, etc., anyone who appears agitated, or in this case abusive in any way can and often should, be denied boarding, for the safety and security of all passengers. In this case, the gate agent did the right thing.

Anytime a passenger exhibits aggressive or odd behavior, or in this case abusive behavior, the airline reserves the right to deny boarding, regardless the motivation, the slur, the situation. This is similar to the “we reserve the right to refuse service” signs we sometimes see at businesses. In this age of hightened security, it is even more important for passengers to behave at the gates, because the airlines really can’t mess around with security. They can and WILL deny boarding if ANY thing seems out of line. In this case, the gate agent did the right thing. The passenger, while she is the paying customer, will hopefully realize that she MUST behave when travelling or she may find herself sitting at alot of airports waiting.
