Summer Anthem Alert: Scissor Sisters’ “Let’s Have a Kiki” (NSFW)

On Scissor Sisters’ latest LP, Magic Hour, front man Jake Shears took a break from tweeting naked pictures to join his band mates in writing the newest, and campiest summer anthem, “Let’s Have a Kiki.”

What is a Kiki, you ask? According to the lyrics, “A kiki is a party, for calming all your nerves. We’re spilling tea, and dishing just desserts one may deserve.” The song is a delightful nod to 90’s house and Paris is Burning realness. “Let’s Have a Kiki” has taken the queer blogosphere by storm, due to the success of a now viral video by Boston club promoters Videodrome Discotheque. Be warned, both the clip and the song are slightly NSFW.

Despite the lack of familiar pop structure, “Kiki” has already surpassed lead single, “Only the Horses” in popularity.

In the week ending June 24, the track’s sales shot up 52% and eclipsed those of the album’s current single, “Only the Horses.” Since then, “Let’s Have a Kiki” has increasingly sold more every week. In the most recent tracking frame (ending July 8), the song moved 2,000 downloads – posting an 18% jump over the previous week.

Scissor Sisters are apparently very pleased pleased with the success of the viral clip. Jake Shears even took to Twitter to express his appreciation.

Is “Let’s Have a Kiki” the new summer jam, or does “Call Me Maybe” still reign supreme?
