Lana Del Rey Opens Up About Lesbian Relationship, Suicide in Summertime Sadness Video

Lana Del Rey’s disastrous SNL performance was love at first sight for me, for whatever reason. Maybe it was the timing? I first listened to her album while packing up everything I owned in the world in my Seattle apartment for my big move back home to New Orleans.

Songs like National Anthem, Video Games and Diet Mountain Dew became the soundtrack to my new/old life. Sleeping on the floor of a cavernous, empty 150-year-old home surrounded by palm trees and the Mississippi River while waiting for my furniture to finally arrive just sort of blended together effortlessly with the songs homegirl was singing to me.

And no track better captures the melancholy of Lana Del Rey’s album more than Summertime Sadness. Flash fact.

But imagine my surprise to see the homegirl used the video to tell the story of a lesbian relationship that ends in tragedy. Like, bridge after bridge after bridge shot tragedy.

LDR’s whole artistry is rooted just as much in who she wants us to believe she is as it is in the reality of this talented young woman’s life. So you never really know how much of the truth you’re actually being invited to see.

Either way, the video is ballsy and topical and another one of my favorites.

What do you think about Lana’s lesbian love affair with actress Jaime King? Are the ladies spinning a yarn or acting out a true story from Lana’s past? And be honest, that ghost in the last shot totally gave you chills, didn’t it?
