DNC Confirms Marriage Equality Support Will Be National Party Platform This Election
The historic ante of the coming election just keeps getting higher and higher. The Democratic National Committee today confirmed that support for marriage equality will indeed be a tenant of the national party platform to be announced at the party’s convention this fall.
Retiring Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass), a member of the drafting committee who recently married his longtime partner, told the Advocate that the decision was reached without dissent.
“The fact is, by every action that should be taken, the Democrats in Washington have repudiated DOMA,” he said, referring to the 1996 law signed by President Bill Clinton that barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage.
The Democrats had an opportunity here to imply state their unified opposition to DOMA at the convention and pretty much call it a day. That alone would have been worth celebrating. But the DNC is taking things a mile further by announcing their plans to make same-sex marriage the law of the land here in the US of A.
Incredible, don’t you think?
