Jessie and the Toy Boys: Fresher than Febreeze.
My first encounter with Jessie and the Toy Boys happened during their stint as the opening act for Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale tour. They were cute, but I must have partied a little too hardy during my parking lot pre-game, because I don’t remember much. There was blonde hair, dance beats, and shirtless boys, so at least I was entertained. Nothing like a Britney Spears concert to bring out your inner lush, right?
I do remember thinking it was funny to see JATTB open for Britney, because Jessie had once accused Britney’s camp of plagiarism. Before hiring the Toy Boys, Jessie was flying solo as Jessie Malakouti, complaining that Brit’s “If U Seek Amy” sounds too much like her song, “Trash Me.” Wait, two pop songs that sound alike? That never happens! I wonder if the Britney connection inspired Jessie to write lyrics informing us that she needs a “Starbucks Frappuccino, ASAP!” Ooooh, Jessie. You are one bad mutha!
Aside from the deeply profound Jessie and the Toy Boys tunes, one of my favorite pop culture obsessions is the Bath Salts controversy. I have no idea why, but anything reminiscent of a potential zombie apocalypse fascinates me – even if it’s drugs that make you freak out and devour your boyfriend.
