Full, Rich, and Creamy: Julia Child Gets Auto-Tuned in Honor of Her 100th Birthday

Today marks the would-be 100^th birthday of celebrity chef and gay icon, Julia Child. Why is Julia Child a gay icon, you ask? How many LGBTQ tots can recall vivid memories of afternoons spent transfixed by that voice? Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Julia Child has received the illustrious Auto-Tune treatment, following in the footsteps of fellow PBS favorite Mr. Rogers.

The best part of Julie & Julia was Meryl Streep, so I’m glad Julia (Ms. Child, if you’re nasty) has been given the proper opportunity to shine with this musical masterpiece. Who says PBS is just for kids?

I’m feeling this treatment, but I would like to see PBS update the music a little. The trip-hop fantasy is fun and all, but as Julia said, “Freshness is essential.”

I don’t know how I feel about that… I mean I love Julia Child she is definitely my idol, I still watch her show to this day… But I really don’t know how to feel about the video…

See He admitted he was the one who made the video! Burn the witch! Just kidding… But seriously, I think it is kind of weird that PBS would support something like that. I mean, like I said before, I don’t really know how I feel about that video.

Personally I’m not surprised, we are talking about a organization in which one of their commercials involved a string quartet playing Vivaldi and upon finishing the piece the four of them jumped up and proceeded to destroying their instruments. I love PBS, plus their most recent adaptation of Sherlock Holmes has been deliciously slashy.

PBS funded the creation of these videos. They did the same thing with Mr. Rogers and Bob Ross

OMG, why are people so offended about this video?!? Julia Child is not here to weigh in with her opinion on the “remix” and whether she would like it or not, it was a creative take on things. All you people getting “uncomfortable” about the video…why? You’re not in it! Get over yourself!

Ummm… When people enjoy a celebrity for a large or small portion of their lives, they tend to have mixed feelings about how people use that persons memory, (especially if they are dead) to depict the person. I think you sir need to get over yourself. People are allowed to have differing opinions. Also, the fact that she is not here to defend herself or this use of her image and legacy is probably the biggest reason why people would be upset by this.

Julia Child devoted herself to the celebration of good food and bringing the fine art of cooking to the masses. I think this video honors her memory as an extension of what she strove to do in her lifetime, and I daresay she would have loved it.

You are correct about Julia devoting a portion of her life to celebrating good food and bringing it to the masses, however Julia was not one for sensationalizing her accomplishments. This video does not focus on good food or the art of cooking. It is just a mash up of her words to make a catchy tune and song. for this reason I think she would not have enjoyed this video.

Similarly when that whole Julie and Julia blog thing happened, Julia wanted nothing to do with it, only because it was done more for attention than for the art of cooking and the joy of cooking. This quote was taken from an interview with Julia’s Editor and good friend at the time “Flinging around four-letter words when cooking isn’t attractive, to me
or Julia. She didn’t want to endorse it. What came through on the blog
was somebody who was doing it almost for the sake of a stunt. She would
never really describe the end results, how delicious it was, and what
she learned. Julia didn’t like what she called ‘the flimsies.’ She
didn’t suffer fools, if you know what I mean.”

As with this example, this video doesn’t focus on the food, or the end result or even the amount of work that goes into cooking it, or how good it taste, her personality, or the experience and time and love she put into making these shows, it is just a mash up of random instances to make a catchy tune with no clear message.
