Mattel Announces Drag Queen Barbie (Seriously!!!)

Barbie’s having herself a kiki, y’all!

Mattel has announced plans to produce their first ever Drag Queen Barbie in collaboration with the New York City-based design duo The Blonds, who are responsible for dressing some of the biggest names around, including Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez.

The gender bender doll called ‘The Blonds Blond Diamond Barbie Doll’ doesn’t come equipped with detachable lady parts or a Ken bump, it is simply a regular Barb that takes after the cross dressing Phillipe Blond of the NYC design duo, and we think it is pretty darn fab.

The drag queen doll is dressed in a diamond encrusted mini dress with a floor sweeping faux fur coat (take note!) glitter pumps and over the top makeup.

If by “drag queen,” Mattel means rhinestones, faux fur and heavy eye makeup, then yes, I suppose this is a Drag Queen Barbie.

But if by “drag queen,” Mattel meant ohhh, I don’t know, DRAG QUEEN, then no, this is not a roaring success.

For those of you unfamiliar with The Blonds, think Kylie Minogue’s Get Outta My Way. The duo is responsible for Kylie’s gold corset, and similar looks for many of your favorite lady pop stars.

Drag Queen Barbie hits shelves in December, just in time for Christmas.

The collective hivemind host to the shared consciousness of Maggie Gallagher, One Million Moms, Rush Limbaugh, and the like will begin melting down in exactly 3…2…1…

Um, OK? I strongly feel that despite *best* intentions this doll is gonna flop bigger than what’s alluded to be between her legs. I’m not against this, but I’ll be quite surprised if this isn’t featured on a Cracked article 5-10 years from now.

I’m all for equal-rights and defying gender roles, but Barbies are for kids and kids don’t need more shallow materialism and messages like that. I don’t know what this doll was supposed to accomplish, but I’m pretty sure they missed it. I wonder if they’ll ever make Barbies without feet shaped specifically for heels.

I don’t like using this word, but this looks more like “Hooker Barbie.” Several years ago, a local store had a display of a Barbie in lingerie. The sign was supposed to say, “Slumber Barbie.” Unfortunately, someone had made a typo and written, “Slum Barbie.” I had a permanent marker and, with the store owner’s permission and gratitude, I corrected the error. Always carry a permanent marker with you, just in case you need to edit something. lol

I’m hopeful they’ve just confused the term “Drag Queen” with the term “Transsexual”. Since i’m pretty sure “Drag” refers to dressing in a way that is inconsistent with how society classically portrays your gender. A female gendered Barbie dressed in female clothing wouldn’t be considered in drag even if she was “born” a male gendered barbie. Or something like that, right?

My kid had cross dressing Ken’s, who loved each other, when she was tiny and this was before she realised that her mums and dads were lesbian and gay. I agree this doll is for grown-ups and so does she she says she wouldn’t have played with her because she’s “not real, like my ken’s were”

To all the idiots saying “OMG, barbie is a kids toy”, lets get one thing straight. Barbie has two different lines. The pink box line, which are strictly intended for your children, and are kept at children’s eye levels in stores. (This would be your ‘Doctor” barbie, “Teacher Barbie” or “Date Barbie”. Then there is the COLLECTORS line, which are NOT intended for children. Some of these dolls are upwards of three or four hundred dollars BRAND NEW. They are packaged in a way so as to display the doll without removing it. These would be your Bob Mackie Barbie dolls, your Van Gogh Dolls, your Celebrity Barbie dolls, etc. These are NOT intended for children, but rather, an adult collector who collects for monetary reasons or novelty, or personal choice. So educate yourselves before you start spouting diarrhea of the mouth, and making yourself sound like an asshat.

there is nothing drag queen about this barbie. lol looks more like pageant girl barbie. And to the person who said “barbies are supposed to be for kids” i mean really?? they are a bad influence to young girls. They say “this is the way you should look” – a body that is not anatomically possible without a lot of surgery. No diversity in her face or body along the barbie lines. Where is “”real woman” barbie. “plus size” barbie – now that would be some real progress.

“Biologically” the doll is female yes. They’re not going to put a tucked penis on a “drag” doll. They’re not going to make new body molds for this single doll. The character is based on a real life drag queen/character of the Blondes. The doll looks exactly like the real life person. So the doll is by definition drag, since the real life character is full male and is a drag queen, not a transvestite. The same applies to the very popular Rupaul doll. It’s “biologically” female but is the character of a real life drag queen.
