I’m in the ladder with this whole matter. As a gay man, I find all of this deplorable. Our founding fathers founded this country to establish freedom. Quite a few of them were very outspoken about their personal oppositions to tradition religion and it’s internal policies. They stated on various occasions, which are well documented, that organized religion corrupts. It’s used to control and oppress a people. I personally think that “Separation of Church and State” trumps both of their arguments. The blatant disregard for this fundamental truth is contemptuous. I support ones right to practice religion freely, no matter the domination. As long as it isn’t used/doesn’t harm or impede another individuals personal freedoms.
By allowing this argument to be up for debate, or possibly established as law, in any state, essentially nullifies the constitutions definition of freedom. It sets a dangerous precedent. One that has already been established as law for heterosexual couples to reap tax benefits. With that being said I believe it is a treacherous avenue in which to take our legal system.
The notion that a peoples religious belief can be upheld in a legal court as law, to govern another individuals freedom, is malignant to the very piece of legislature that allows for our freedoms. I would like to offer a simple analogy of my interpretation of these situations. Hinduism condemns the slaughter of cattle. As far as my knowledge into the matter of Hinduism has lead me to believe, I’m not an expert. But for arguments sake lets believe that it is absolute fact. Let’s say that in the United States there was a large enough population of Hindu practitioners that if this were ever to be argued before Congress. That it could have the potential to be adopted as Law. Now say that this law were to be passed. The rest of the population would have to abide by this law. Even though it is not part of their religious beliefs. That constitutes a very blatant intrusion into another person freedoms to enjoy a steak for instance. That lets say 40% would be absolutely up in arms over their personal freedoms being infringed upon.
I cannot fathom any elected official even taking time to listen to such an atrocity against our Constitution. Which they are sworn to uphold. Maybe I’m simply misinformed. I’m certainly obliged to persuasion based upon facts. Provided something proves of merit, I’ll gladly adjust my opinions accordingly. Until that day I wish for our Government to uphold the truths upon which it was founded. They are unfaltering if followed. The men who wrote them were well educated for their time. They regarded the written word with honor and respected the numerous interpretations of written language. Perhaps it is why they wrote with solidifying elegance which cannot be denied even to this day.
