Grindr: Good for Dates, Hookups, and Syphilis
Grindr, the gay dating app, can be blamed (or praised?) for many hookups here in the U.S. and in as many as 192 countries across the world.
But in New Zealand, Grindr is blamed for a syphilis outbreak in the gay community.
Woof. In 2006, 64 percent of syphilis cases in the U.S. were in men who have sex with men. Syphilis is of special concern since the sores it causes make it easier to transmit and acquire HIV.
Grindr may do a lot of wonderful things, but providing protection isn’t one of them, and while it offers a list of testing clinics (or so I hear, I don’t know, it’s not like I’ve ever created a profile or anything, why are you looking at me like that?), safe sex is something you have to practice yourself.
Only you can prevent forest fires… or something.
