Honey Boo Boo: Ain’t Nuttin Wrong Wit Bein Gay. Errybody a Lil Gay!

Honey Boo Boo’s gay Uncle Poodle comes to town in this clip from the titular character’s show that I cannot figure out a way to embed in this post for the life of me.

And then the whole family has a cold glass of their signature, delicious blend of equal parts ignorant flavor, adorable flavor and grape flavor Kool-Aid before saying a bunch of things about gay people that probably shouldn’t be said about gay people, let alone on television.

But we as a reality television-watching society aren’t really going to trouble ourselves too much about any of it because half-SQUEEE and half-we recognize that the stars of the program are still at least three generations away from mounting the family’s first college diploma on the mantle. Oh, and owning a mantle.

But goddammit, HBB really is pretty stinking adorable with her talk of poodles and everybody being a little bit gay. Fact.

You win this time, Honey Boo Boo. But we’re watching you. (Actually, this show looks like an enormous brainmelt and we aren’t at all! LULZ!)

There’s just one thing we need to clear up, I guess…

It’s not the first time she’s talked about how it’s okay to be gay. I watch the show because I grew up in the South and…eh, I guess it’s a little nostalgic (and admittedly scary). She seems to be an open-minded, charismatic little girl who, despite what you might think of the people on the show, seems to have been raised right in regards to how you treat other people. She doesn’t seem trained to say these things (if you could even train Alana to say anything, really).

She’s cute, funny, and sassy, and I really don’t mind having one more advocate/ally on our side. It may not seem like much, but every positive portrayal of LGBT people on television is one more step toward acceptance.

Does your poll at the end have to resort to fat-shaming language to make its point about this family? LGBT rights does not need to throw other movements under the bus to get their point across.

fat shaming? really? other movements? It’s not that I don’t agree with you, but damn, everyone is getting so PC these days that it’s almost ridiculous. MOVEMENTS are typically about acceptance for things that you can’t help. I believe everyone is beautiful the way that they are- but if they could be “shamed” by a little “thin ice” joke…… then your movement isn’t going too well. Jokes are okay!! Lighten up.

I think it’s awesome actually! It’s a family that not only excepts their gay family member, but also includes him in their lives and welcomes his opinions and personality in HBB’s upbringing and extracurricular activity.

To be upset that they as a family make lighthearted jokes about gay people, stereotypes, and referring to him as a “poodle” is ridiculous. They are a family that jokes with each other with no ill will. I approve.
