You know that awkward teenage series of events that begins with you discovering you have had a penis ALL THIS TIME, and ends with your parents taking away all of your computer privileges because mom was getting leather sex dungeon pop-ups while trying to type out her Sunday School lesson plan and the dots weren’t too hard to connect? You were spending an awful lot of time in the family office, after all…

Well imagine your deep, deep shame exacerbated by the entire incident being documented by your dad on the front page of Reddit. Your cool dad, yes. But still, your dad talking about your internet porn issues to the entire world.

Here’s a letter from the dad in question to his porny, porny son.

I want to start out by saying that I love ya and I’m not trying to embarrass you. Before you do anything else click the star in the upper right hand corner of internet explorer which is already pulled up and then click back on the icon to the right of the skype symbol in your toolbar to pull this page back up. —————————————> That history is the reason that you got that scamware and all the other crap on your computer. I want to tell you that it’s ok. Listen, I was 13 once too and it wasn’t so long ago that I don’t remember. I’m not mad or anything. It’s life and I did it too. I just want you to know that most of those sites are places that can and will ruin your computer. You were actually lucky that it only did what it did. There are viruses and other scamware that can completly ruin a computer and I can’t afford to buy you another 1800 dollar machine because you went to a site that fried it.

There are sites that are completely safe and you can go on them and not have your computer turned into a piece of junk. You can go to these sites and not screw up your computer. Don’t click on any links taking you to other sites and please only go to these. Ninty percent of porn sites have crap that can brick a computer.

Listen, I won’t tell your mom and I’m not gonna make a big deal out of this. In fact I’m not gonna make any size deal out of it. If you don’t wanna talk about it that’s fine and I completely understand. I’ve been on this earth three times as long as you and there’s nothing you have done or will do that I haven’t done before. If you want to completely ignore this ever happened then I can and will do that too. Please don’t act awkward around me because of this. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. I just can’t have an 1800 dollar machine turned into a brick because you haven’t learned where to go on the internet. I’m not going to put a child lock on your computer or punish you in any way because as I said you did nothing wrong. I would like you to not be back here so much though. You literally spend all of your time back here. I’d like to see you more often. I like doing stuff with you and miss it.

I love you and I couldn’t be more proud of you.

Boys (and girls) will always look at porn . I think the dad made the right choice here because the kid is not harming himself, and sometimes women tend to overreact when they learn that their little babies are now old enough to want to look at porn. The best thing about this is that the dad had the courage to inform his son about this, and was able to open up to his kid. This letter made me go AWWWWW .

People addicted to porn are like people addicted to the internet, their Black Berry, or facebook. It’s about that tiny margin of people susceptible to that behavioral addiction, not the pornography, internet, smartphone, or social network itself. Otherwise it would be a global epidemic. Keep in mind the VAST MAJORITY of the world consumes porn, or is too unstable to have reliable internet access, or have the boot of a tyrant crushing their fap hand.

Most people that watch porn, that doesn’t make them addicts. I’m no expert but I would guess that 90, maybe 95% of men with access to it watch porn at least on occasion, women, I’m not sure probably considerably less (but yes girls do it too). If a kid wants to watch porn, they’ll find it, forbidding it won’t do anything to help. Teaching them how to safely, and discreetly find porn will be a lot more helpful, even if it is more awkward, at least then the computer is safe. Because seriously, to a teen rules are meant to be broken, especially when that rule is in conflict with their hormones.

I’ve had the awesome opportunity of raising 5 nieces and nephews and mentored many others. The one truism in all of it is: you’ve got to pick your battles. I always asked myself: was it really that bad; is it something I would or did do; was it really that bad; did anyone or could anyone get hurt? If you hassle your children about every little thing, eventually they will just tune you out. Then when the really tough stuff comes along, you are going to be hurting.

He did the right thing, I fear what he would’ve done had the porn been gay, bdsm or something otherwise culturally taboo to him.

Legally the Dad took a risk suggesting or even mentioning specific porn sites, this can be actionable in some states with draconian laws relating to what men can introduce children to, likely put in place to criminalize the ‘grooming’ some pedophiles do to victims with porn.

An alternative solution is a partitioned hard drive that dual boots linux, it’s far safer to browse porn via linux, most porn virus stuff will only work on windows, rarely with Mac,and almost never with Linux.

He did the best thing a parent could do honestly. I think the kid shouldn’t have posted it because now it could lead to a big risk of authorities finding out his dad is allowing a minor to watch porn. But overall it was good of him to not give him any BS about it and admit that he himself was young and looked at stuff like that.

When my nephews got to be around fourteen or fifteen, my brother in law (their dad) got together all of his old Playboys. He put them in a box and then put the box with a note on the top that said “Get rid of these for me” in their room. That was their discussion about porn.

I would do the same. I expect my kids to see porn and to explore their sexuality as teens and that is okay. I would rather not have them kill the computer in the process!
