I’m more confused (possibly outraged) by the blackface going on in this video. WTF?

Yes, white people wearing black face, showing an effigy killing of another artist who by industry comparison is more original than any other pop act (actually singing live? hello.) is just small, petty, and an insecure shriek for attention that’s almost as loud as their tired old need to shop at Hot Topic.

lol as someone who’s from South Africa (where Die Antwoord hail from) these comments made me chuckle. Interestingly in a country so horrifically tainted by our racist history, no one even mentioned the black face of Yolandi Visser here – it was a non-issue. Somehow we’ve managed to see the joke where the hypersensitive first world could not. And on that note, I think it’s important to point out that Die Antwoord is part of the Zef counter-culture movement who actively ridicule popular culture by satirising it. It’s a persona-based music movement, where all the garb and language and attitude is an act. It’s about acting “cool” when you know it’s not, to the point where this hyperbole becomes your every day culture. Saying “no” to Gaga and then having a parktown prawn (the squeeling cricket) removed from her vagina and having her eaten by a street-lion is all part of the act of satirising both the current hip-hop culture and the pop world filled with artists who think they’re cooler than Gaga – that, and the way the west sees Africa as a dangerous, backward place, a spectacle to gawk at. They’ve taken all the common misconceptions that the West has of Africa and satirised them: “everyone is black”, “wild animals roam the streets”, “you get held up at gunpoint by armed gangs” etc etc. I think a bit of context would have helped in this article.
