Gay Teen Superheroes Wiccan and Hulkling Kiss in Marvel’s Young Avengers

Jamie McKelvie’s shot of teen superheroes Wiccan and Hulkling sharing a same-sex kiss in Marvel’s recently relaunched Young Avengers comic is notable in that A) WICCAN AND HULKLING ARE KISSING, and B) It took creators Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung six years to show the gay couple locking lips for the first time.

McKelvie and new writer Kieron Gillen are wasting no time skirting the issue of the couple’s, well, coupleness this time around. The characters are 18, they’re gay, and they’ll be kissing all up in your superhero comics, thank you very much.

I’m pretty sure they’ve kissed before a lot. So I don’t find this much of a surprise. I’d rather talk about the gay Wolverine in X-treme X-Men and his boyfriend, Hercules

They’ve only ever kissed once on panel during Children’s Crusade, which was the last thing they were in before this relaunch, before that kiss they rarely went beyond Teddy’s arm around Billy’s shoulder

I think the problem is, the blog author is stating that his kiss in the new title is their first kiss and that the title has been skirting the issue of them being a couple. This is ridiculous when you realize that they kissed in Children’s Crusade (which was their first kiss) and their subject of their “coupleness” has been a major point in the series. Perhaps the author is trying to state that now that they are 18 things are going to get hot and heavy. Well, they have been sleeping together before this new title, so that really isn’t a first either.

There is absolutely no way I can make this comment without coming off as an ignoramus so I’m just going to say it and if you’re offended *shrug*.

Billy’s hair makes him look really “fem” in this series… Wiccan always came across to me as a “boy next door” type. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with “femness” and I would totally embrace a “fem” character especially in a comic like this one that is lucky enough to have an audience that isn’t strictly by the book comic lovers.

The thing I love about the Young Avengers is how accessible it is. Almost anyone could pick it up and enjoy it.
