Azealia Banks Loses Her Record Deal for Anti-Gay Twitter Rant

Let this be a lesson to all of those who have been tempted to tell Perez Hilton to, ahem, “gobble a dick.”

Harlem lyricist Azealia Banks is the latest casualty of a major label deal cut short.

Interscope Records, the Universal Music Group label founded by Jimmy Iovine is reportedly not picking up the much-buzzed-about the 21-year-old rapper’s option for future recordings, says a source close to the situation. When approached today about Banks’ current debut album situation, the label insider simply stated, “Azealia Banks will no longer be releasing her LP under Interscope.”

Broke with Expensive Taste, was scheduled to be released in February so perhaps this clarifies the lack of promotion and official releases for a debut album that was supposed to drop within weeks.

Banks’ gobble comment was reportedly not the one that did her in. Banks, Hilton and Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters spent much of the weekend embroiled in headlines about a threeway Twitter fight in which Banks called Hilton a “faggot” and told him to kill himself.

It’s worth mentioning that Banks identifies as bisexual, or she at least publicly identifies as bisexual. But before you begin to weigh the homophobia inherent in one LGBT person attacking another’s LGBTness, take a gander at the actual comments made for yourself. A question though before we boot Banks from pop culture for the next 3 weeks or so until a less scrupulous record label offers her an even more lucrative deal; Why is it that we find it so socially unacceptable for a black, bisexual, female rapper to use homophobic slurs against gay men, but we allow a white, male artist like Eminem to toss those same words around?

And just for context here, where was the outrage when Nicki Minaj and Eminem released their track together that uses the same word that Banks was dropped over?

This is simply gossip. Nothing has been confirmed at all from Interscope and Azealia has denied it being dropped. I wouldn’t be surprised if Perez Hilton made this rumor up himself as wishful thinking. Her album is ready to drop for a February release. And her album has been on all the 2013 most wanted lists. Interscope would be very foolish to drop her at this point because another label would just snatch her up instantly.

Interscope would be smart, there are a lot of people that are really upset about this, and they don’t want the bad publicity. An artist that runs her mouth like this one is nothing but a liability to a business.

I actually deleted Nicki Minaj’s album after Eminem said that word. I don’t have time for that bullshit. I wont support any artist using that language; it hurts my ears & my soul to hear it.

The rap industry is loaded with misogynistic, homophobic hate speech for years. No one takes the the machismo machines to task even when their lyrics promote violence against and degradation of women and sexual minorities. But a bisexual, provocative woman gets her record deal pulled because of a petty flame war on twitter. Hm. I don’t like Banks’ music, but there is definitely a double standard here. Gross. Everyone involved is gross.

I don’t support any artist that uses that kind of language. The most frustrating thing to me is when an artist uses these slurs in their songs, and nobody says anything about it. THEN when people DO say something about it, these artists come back with how “accepting” they are, and all that bs. If they were really all that accepting and truly an “ali” they wouldn’t want to use that language that hurts people. In Eminem’s case, he uses language that hurts everyone, not just lgbt. That’s kind of his thing, I think that’s why people don’t really say much. Either way, it’s wrong.

As for this chick, I’m glad she lost her deal, maybe that will make her think twice about saying that stuff next time. The thing that makes me so sad about this is that she really told someone (I don’t care if you hate them for no reason or they gave you a reason to hate them) to kill themselves. Suicide is a serious matter and people throw that around WAY too often.

Hmmm, well. I read on another site that Azealia came out as a bisexual in her apology, so I guess to some people it seems like a cover given her current situation. So I didn’t take offense to the way UB phrased it. Her apology by the way… is absolutely horrendous. She basically covers up her homophobic language with sexist language. Yeesh.

Better yet, why is it seemingly OK for gay men to throw the f-word around like it’s no big thing, but it’s not OK for anyone else? Even better yet – why the hell are we still offended by the word to begin with? It kind of parallel’s the black community and the n-word, does it not? The history of demeaning use associated with the word (should) make it off-putting for other people’s use, but as a community if our members want to reclaim the word to try and make it harmless, as you suggest it should be, that’s their prerogative. I would say that -anyone- should know better in the year 2013, but there’s no reason to expect the GBLT community to know any better about anything. Someone who is gay or bi is as equally likely to be a trash spewing moron as a straight person. Equality! It means that the GBLT community occupies the entire bell curve of intelligence and ethical awareness. I have no reason to disbelieve Azealia’s claim of bisexuality, but she’s kind of dim regardless.

You know, I normally would not approve of such language being thrown around, but Perez Hilton is serious slime. Despite his recent vow to be nicer, we have to acknowledge that this guy clawed his way to the middle by outing celebrities before they were ready, among other sick practices. For him to criticize Azealia for attention-seeking is the epitome of hypocrisy. The worst words should be used for the worst people, and in this case, they fit. Turning a new leaf does not excuse all of the poison ivy he cultivated and his celebrity needs to end.
