We’ve warned you over and over that cases of incurable Super Gonorrhea were being reported across the globe in 2012. Well, lucky day; Super Gonorrhea has officially arrived on North American shores and in North American genitals!

Of 133 patients who received treatment and returned for their follow-up appointment for testing, 6.77 percent had failed to respond to treatment, which corresponds to about one in 15 infections. Drug-resistant gonorrhea has officially arrived in North America.

Other experts in the field call “its arrival deeply troubling; clinicians now face the emergence of cephalosporin-resistant N. gonorrhoeae without any well-studied, effective backup treatment options,” observed a team of researchers led by Robert Kirkcaldy, of the Division of STD Prevention at the CDC, in an essay published in the same issue of JAMA. And, they noted, as there are no proven alternative treatment waiting in the drug development wings, “the antibiotic pipeline is running dry.”

Bonus news: Men who have sex with men have demonstrated and even higher rate of antibiotic ineffectiveness in treating the Super G.

Single LGBT people can actually try getting to know people before they sleep with them. STD transmission rates are so high in gay youths because they often go through relationships (usually just a few dates then sex or just plain sex) one after the other. If one could even call them relationships in the first place. What is so terrible about not jumping into bed with some stranger? Taking a little more time to get to know someone and their health history instead of sharing your body with every Tom, Dick, and Harry that they have slept with. Somewhere gay culture has gone terribly wrong. When HIV was so rampant in the 80s and 1990s there was a push for more condoms and more monogamy. Yet, it is like we tossed all of that out of the window. Even though there has been a recorded rise in HIV transmission rates over the past two years in the United States.

gonorrhea infection in general because many of its patients are men who
have had sexual encounters with other men, a population that, so far,
has shown a higher rate of infections with genetic propensity to resist
antibiotic treatment.”

What bothers me most is unlike the CDC’s plethora of sexual behavior related information correlating infection rates of certain STDs to certain behavior is that this article fails to point out ANY information to those men who sleep with men – WHO SLEEP WITH WOMEN – as well. My money is that these same men also can’t pick a side of the fence.

Michael, the sad fact of the matter is that, for whatever reason, people do not want to take precautions during sex, even if it’s with someone they don’t know. In this day and age, with HIV/AIDS on the rise again, and various other STD strains gaining in virulence, NOT using protection is not only looking to ruin your own life, but the lives of others, too. The “me” culture of selfishly being concerned with only one’s own gratification has been a huge contributor to this and we must become as concerned for others as we are for ourselves. It’s both that simple and that impossible. *sigh*
