Jodie Foster’s Emotional Coming Out Speech

She went over the river and through the woods on the way there, but eventually Jodie Foster came out as a lesbian at last night’s 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The response, at least in my household and among those who I spoke with about the speech, was one of perplexity. Honey Boo Boo, Daniel Craig’s bottom, Mel Gibson’s complete and total confusion, an audio problem right at the important part, and Jane Lynch’s face possibly betraying a feeling of having been jabbed at – this video has it all!

Sitting there with my wonderful husband and my beloved foster mother at my side, I admit I choked up a bit at the mom part though.

I don’t care for the fact that her coming out, which was rather ambiguous, precludes her being a lesbian. She could just as easily be bisexual.

It was a very moving speech. You could tell that she’s not used to speaking to a large group of people, especially when it comes to speaking about private things. She is and has always been a private person. Everyone has that right, and she hinted at it when she spoke about how everyone is so accessible nowadays that the notion of privacy is almost a thing of the past.

I for one, was moved to tears when she spoke about her mother. It wasn’t really about coming out, this speech was about a lady, her life’s work, her contributions to society, and her yearning to be accepted and “less lonely”. Aren’t those things the very things you and I search for in life? I commend her for saying what she did, and would not have changed one iota of it.

I thought it was sweet and typical Jodie, humble and unassuming. She said she was ding it for her sons and she was speaking to them. I got what she said, hard to believe she is 50! I have been a fan since I was a kid and I will be to the day I die. Thanks Jodie for not making it a spectacle!

Loved it. It has been unspoken common knowledge for years, and she managed to say it without saying in that speech. I don’t think Jane was taking anything personally. I get the feeling Jodie understands that without the courage of the actors before her, who did have to make the statement “I Am Gay” on the cover of magazines or in some other large forum, then she would not have the ability to say “I don’t need to tell you what you already know.” She didn’t deny it – she just didn’t let it define her.

I’ve always felt there are different types of activism, all equally important and necessary. There will alway be, and needs to be, a group that quietly lives life – the embodiment of the truth that gays, bisexuals, transgender people are just that: people. We have families and lives and loves no different than our hetero counterparts. But without Stonewall, without drag queens, rainbow flags, parades and protests, that existence would just be hiding and assimilation.

So, I’m proud of Jodie for walking down the road the Ellen, Jane, Neil, and many others built with their courage, even if she did so without fanfare.
