The “Barbie Dreamhouse Experience,” brought to you by Berlin
Someone (Christopher Rahofer) is building a life-size Barbie Dreamhouse. Protestors say that Barbie is a bad role model for little girls because, well, she’s a model. Or a pop star.
I say someone did not do their research very well. Barbie has had a host of other jobs, immediately evident by a most cursory wikipedia search that cites:
A full list of Barbie’s past education and work history can be found here, including plastic surgeon and President of the United States.
The ”Barbie Dreamhouse Experience” has the potential to be as surreal as walking onto a Baz Lurhmann set. And, granted, perhaps Christopher Rahofer isn’t really aiming to create a good deal of critical awareness, but look at what this one commenter on Spiegel (handle: Jakespeare) said in response to–what I would like to call–the instillation:
Yes, with the addition of G.I. Joe and a solid soundtrack reviving the band Aqua, Baz Lurhmann might be able to cross another thing off his bucket list.
And who said this ”Barbie Dreamhouse Experience” is just for little girls? Given the choice of going to Disney World, Dollywood, or the Barbie Dreamhouse Experience, I know where I would rather go. Fortunately, the Barbie Dreamhouse Experience is being constructed to be completely transportable (just like the “real” thing!). And, for the love of Camp, I hope it is coming soon to a city near you (me).
