Lots and Lots of Jason Collins
I was pulled in an entirely opposite direction yesterday from the one I first set out in, and I missed much of the Jason Collins coming out mania. But yes, he’s gay, he’s black, and he is a currently playing athlete on the NBA’s Washington Wizards.
Dag, does my piece about Tong, the trans moloid coming out go against yesterday’s grain or what?
To make amends, here is lots and lots of Jason Collins media from the past 24 hours. Eat your heart out.
Ellen congratulates Jason Collins:
Collins on Good Morning America:
The Boston Red Sox invite Collins to throw out the first pitch at Fenway Park. (!!!)
We salute you, @jasoncollins34 for your courage and leadership. Any time you want to throw out a first pitch at Fenway Park, let us know.

First Lady Michelle Obama congratulates Collins. (!!!!!!!!!)

And then there’s this asshat accusing Collins of, ahem, “walking in open rebellion of God.”
I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, “I’m different.” If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.
My journey of self-discovery and self-acknowledgement began in my hometown of Los Angeles and has taken me through two state high school championships, the NCAA Final Four and the Elite Eight, and nine playoffs in 12 NBA seasons.
