So Hot Right Now: Art in Unexpected Places
Unicorn Booty has been a bit of a ghost town this summer because I’ve been focused on expanding upon the success of my restaurant in New Orleans, Booty’s Street Food. In the 9 months that we’ve been open, we’ve had features in VOGUE, BBC Travel, glowing reviews in every local publication, and the honor of being named one of New Orleans Magazine’s Best New Restaurants of the Year. Woohoo!
One thing that everyone passing through the doors of Booty’s agrees on, it’s that our arts project, Bywaterloo, is cool as hell. Each second Saturday of the month, two new artists take up residency in each of our bathrooms with a site-specific art installation. Bywaterloo installations have included enormous unicorn busts bursting from the walls, walls plastered with vintage Seventeen Magazine pages while Boo Hazard’s narrated her own diary over a speaker to the bathroom user, and a walk-in felt and yarn Valentine. So far, so dope!
As someone who celebrates art in unexpected places, I think it’s fantastic that Beck’s is doing their own riff on unexpected art projects via Beck’s Art Labels.
“Each year, Beck’s selects six artists, from different disciplines, to design original creative work to live on Beck’s beer labels. Dedicated to supporting up-and-coming artistic talent, Beck’s will display these designs on 13.2 million labels, amounting to 5.16 million square feet of canvas – more than eight times the square footage of the Museum of Modern Art in New York – for a summer-long art exhibit.”
Big thanks to Beck’s for sponsoring this series of posts!
