With 7 States Pushing Anti-Trans Bathroom Bills, ACLU Vows to Fight Back

Posted on

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced it is preparing to fight back against the onslaught of anti-trans bathroom bills spawning all over the country. Legislators in seven states are pushing for laws to forbid trans people from using the restroom that matches their gender identity: Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington.

Alabama’s bill is particularly extreme, and calls for businesses to appoint an attendant to patrol bathrooms like some kind of potty police. This is all in the wake of North Carolina’s HB2, which has cost the state $560 million so far in lost business. It turns out bigotry has its price.

But that’s not all. Last year, almost 200 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced nationwide, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

But the ACLU promises to protect the rights of LGBTQ people in court. A statement released by the ACLU reads:

No matter what lies ahead, the ACLU will be there every step of the way. We will fight to stop discriminatory bills from becoming law, we will keep fighting in court, and we will continue to stand in solidarity with the trans advocates on the front lines.
