More Americans (Especially Millennials) Identify as LGBT

Posted on

According to a new Gallup poll, the portion of American adults who identify as LGBT increased to 4.1% in 2016, up from 3.5% in 2012, which puts the estimated number of LGBT adults in the USA around 10 million.

The poll asked respondents if they identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender but not if they identified as queer or non-binary.

The study also confirms previous research that Millennials (people born between 1980 and 1998) are the queerest generation of all. Between 2012 and 2016, the percentage of Millennials who identify as LGBT increased from 5.8% to 7.3%. That’s twice as high as any other generation.

Is America Getting Gayer?

So what does all this mean? Is America getting queerer? Did Tinky Winky make our children gay like the conservatives said he would?

Probably not. The poll only measures people who identify as LGBT, not necessarily people who are LGBT (or queer, for that matter). The real numbers are probably higher, as there are a lot of straight-identified people who do things like watch gay porn and have gay sex.

But the increases likely mean that more people feel comfortable identifying as LGBTQ, which is a good thing indeed.
