The most important historical discovery of all time? Jesus was gay.

Late in March 2017, historians discovered a document written in May 1593 by the police informant and part-time spy Richard Baines which claimed that famous British playwright Christopher Marlowe had declared that Jesus Christ was gay, a statement he might have been murdered for soon after. While the truth of Baines’ claim remains uncertain, it raises an interesting question about the historical Jesus and his sexuality.

In 2011, flash flood revealed a cave buried for two thousand years in Jordan. The contents within were heralded as “maybe the most important discovery in the history of archaeology.”

The cave was a treasure trove packed with 70+ lead books from the earliest days of Christianity. The nitty gritty about Jesus’ relationships with his disciples is spelled out in no uncertain terms.

The BBC reports:

The books, or “codices”, were apparently cast in lead, before being bound by lead rings.

Their leaves — which are mostly about the size of a credit card — contain text in Ancient Hebrew, most of which is in code.

If the relics are of early Christian origin rather than Jewish, then they are of huge significance.

One of the few people to see the collection is David Elkington, a scholar of ancient religious archaeology who is heading a British team trying to get the lead books safely into a Jordanian museum.

He says they could be “the major discovery of Christian history”, adding: “It’s a breathtaking thought that we have held these objects that might have been held by the early saints of the Church.”

But what it’s what these codices contain that ultimately makes them so revolutionary. The Guardian says that “the most astounding finding from the newly discovered lead codices is that Jesus Christ was unambiguously and openly gay.”:

He and his disciples formed a same-sex coterie, bound by feelings of love and mutual support. There are recorded instances of same-sex activity – the “beloved disciple” plays a significant role – and there is affirmation of the joys of friendship and of living and loving together.

A whole new complexion is given to that rather puzzling passage where Jesus exhorts his followers to break family ties: “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14, 26). It seems clear now that this is less a negative repudiation of family and more a positive exhortation to join in affirmation of a gay lifestyle and love.

There is at least one new parable, that of the two young men. There are clear echoes of the relationship between David and Jonathan, for Jesus speaks of one young man having his soul “knit with the soul” of the other, and loving him “as his own soul”. Intriguing is evidence that the Catholics might be closer to the truth about the status of Mary, the mother of Jesus, than are the Protestants. She has a much bigger role in the life of Jesus than many hitherto expected, with Jesus frequently returning home and making much of her.

Conversely, there is at least one incident when Jesus quarrels violently with Joseph, who shows great hostility and makes wild claims about “manliness”. Before, one might have thought that, given Mary’s virginity, Joseph’s attitude was reflecting the ambiguities of his status in the family; but now it seems more probable that we have here a classic example of the Freudian triangle: over-possessive mother, hostile father, gay son.

Holy homosexuality, Batman! All of this bears the question, What would gay Jesus do?

  • Check your links. The one to the Guardian also leads to the BBC story and I would really like to see the complete article.

That would explain why all the priests molested the boys and not girls.

NOTE the sub-headline: “What if the newly found codices provided evidence of Jesus’s same-sex activity? Michael Ruse imagines the implications” and below that “The question: What would you add to the Bible?”

He doesn’t cite his source for these “revelatory” passages.

The following article may be valuable in considering how much credence to give Rush’s sensationalist pratings:

  • This is an amazing find, but truthfully, those of us who are also of the book, do you think it will change the way in which you “believe” or practice your faith? It’s wonderful that now there is possibly evidence to place back into the typical homophobic argument, especially if many of you get into it with Catholics or other Christians about homosexuality etc. But as far as your faith is concerned, do you think it’s changed now that you’ve read this? I for one can say, I will go on the same way I always have done, a person who loves thy neighbor etc, living a life that is spiritually challenging in many ways, but definitely continue trying to be a good person. Really, the only people who will have to change their views in reading this story, are the same people who could easily “bury” this evidence right back up again…

  • NICE!

  • Faith denies evidence. People will go on believing as they have. Regardless, I would hardly consider this the “Most Important Find Ever.”

I am sending this to EVERYONE from my old church, emails and printouts, with notes that say “I told you so, I told you so,” attached!!!

The Guardian article that is referenced, “Jesus as an Openly Gay Man” is a thought experiment premised on hypothetical findings, not a report of actual findings. Unfortunately, this article portrays a hypothetical situation as actual fact, an act which displays either an inattention to detail unbecoming of a journalist of any caliber, or a shameful lack of personal integrity on the part of the author.

  • My mind is blown.

Friends, this Guardian is playing a “what if” scenario. It hasn’t been proven that Jesus was gay. (Although, it hasn’t been proven that he wasn’t.)

  • Clarissa Camez

I think this should make some happy some sad and others horrified in which camp are you? me glad to have the truth see the light of day! The truth shall set you free!

I thought we already had this down. I will paraphrase the line by Christ that is in both the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary. “Thomas is to me as Mary is to me”. Can also read, “Mary is what Thomas was to me”, and later refers to Mary as his companion, a term used to signify mated or partnered.

I really don’t know where we get the idea that homosexuality (a word not created till 2000 years later) was an unacceptable lifestyle at or before the time of Christ. There seems to be no evidence to suggest that same sex partnerships were a norm and did not became unacceptable until hundreds of years later.

Until these archeological findings have been really tested and studied I don’t think that we can have any definite findings. I do know that I have always said that 1) Jonathan and David were in fact gay lovers (and David is a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ) and 2) if Jesus were alive today, he would most definitely be mistaken for a gay Buddhist. I definitely do have to wonder what the fundamental Christians in my life will have to say about this though? hmm….. For we all see as through a hazy window! 🙂 NBL

I am a space Engineer from Pakistan. I believe in the scientific ways through which we predict the conditions prevailed at the time when the remainings were actual bodies but blindly believing on script is not scientific.books can be written by hostile or those who were/are not Christians etc etc. Please think and act in a logical way. Thank you. I am a Muslim by religion and strongly believe that hazrat Essa (Jesus Christ) was a messenger from God.messengers of Allah (God) were the purist and most pious people on earth. Christianity is against the homosexuality. How it is possible that a man who is the preacher of a religion which is against homosexuality, is gay . Allah pardon.

  • TC Wilson

I think it turned out that the codices were somehow faked, or something.

  • The religion was not initially against homosexuality. Just as it did not originally cast women in a submissive, less meaningful light. Jesus wanted equality for all, but men in power picked and chose which stories to tell. That’s how the bible was born.

Keep us posted on what he says. I am very interested!

You know what is hilarious to me the mention of david and jonathan, because im convinced they were gay lovers and im sure that if one of them was a woman it would be the most referred to love story in the bible

  • ikeamonkey89

Where does it say Jesus was gay in the original story? It doesn’t.

  • NRA

It did if you read it…

  • 12 gay Jewish boys smoking weed in the Olive Garden… whose best friend was a fag-hag… and one of their friends whose name was John was into water sports…it’s possible!

  • Aaron Hobbs

Which chapter and verses? I would love to read the part where it said Jesus was gay. I dont care if he was truly gay or straight, i just want to know so that i can learn to debate with someone who denies the truth.

  • Brenda Smithers

That is absolutely not true at all. I was there in that life & remember it well and he was not gay. Just because people are doesn’t mean they have to try to make Christ that way. Mary Magdalene is/was his Twin, his divine spouse, and they were together & had children. There is a proven bloodline. Some of this disinformation really needs to stop. All of the books and sacred texts have been rewritten, altered, parts removed, and the certain disciples themselves altered his true teachings. The elites and people in power have been changing all written materials and also “decoding & deciphering” them incorrectly for thousands of years to push their own agendas. It is unbelievable what people will believe and try to prove if it serves their own wants. It’s also ridiculous that people insist on ruling their lives by books written by men; not written by God or Christ, but by men who were being influence & turned on Christ in truth as soon as he had passed.
