Bigot Resigns From Job, Rather Than Sign Gay Marriage Licenses

Laura Fotusky, the Republican town clerk in Barker, Broome County, submitted her resignation last night, saying she could not sign licenses for same-sex couples. Same-sex marriage becomes legal July 24. Her resignation is effective July 21.

“The Bible clearly teaches that God created marriage between male and female as a divine gift that preserves families and cultures. Since I love and follow Him, I cannot put my signature on something that is against God,” she wrote in her resignation letter, which was posted last night on the New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms’ website.

Fotusky is the first clerk to resign over the issue, but Jason McGuire, executive director of the anti-gay-marriage group New Yorkers For Constititutional Freedoms’ predicted, “This is just the tip of the iceberg.” He said the law should have exempted clerks who because of their religious beliefs do not want to recognize same-sex marriages.

“I would be compromising my moral conscience if I participated in the licensing procedure. Therefore, I will be resigning as of July 21. I wanted you to know my position as I understand the marriage law goes into effect on July 24,” Fotusky said in her resignation letter. “It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve the Town as Barker Town Clerk.”

Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out, Fotusky.

As an educated, open-minded person, I refuse to serve ignorant bigots – oh, wait.

  • This is great news!! One less religious wacko separating “itself” from government, the way it should be. 🙂

  • She will be missed…hopefully not by eggs and other projectile objects 🙂

The post on facebook of this article read “see you later homo hater”

I am a gay man with nothing but strong beliefs to equality rights and all that, but that statement and the following comments on facebook as well as on here are disgusting to me. This person made a choice that was true to their beliefs and did no one harm except herself. Yet, it seems the majority of gays and gay supporters want to shout praises of good riddance followed by messages of disdain for someone standing up for their beliefs.

As a minority requesting universal acceptance, we sure are doing everything we can to slaughter our image to those people who already have a hard time fitting us into their perception of normalcy. The gays as a whole strut around in gay pride parades showcasing a sexual image and prance around blogs condeming anyone who stands in their way with the common term Bigot…. Who here is really the bigot?!

The HRC and voters are making wonderful advances for our cause but we do it by spitting in the faces of opponents…

This is nothing more than a childish game of “I know you are but what am I” and I more so hate to acknowledge that we started it AND we continue it. We can continue to keep going this way and will accomplish marriage equality and will only generate a more distinct polarity between the left and right …

    Hey Laura Go Fotusky Yourself!

  • She was following her feelings and for that i give her credit.

  • People will have to learn that separation of church and state means that you don’t get to bring your church rules to work for the state and apply them there. Keep your hate in the church where it apparently originates.

Really? These people believe that an eternal, omnipresent being created marriage for us and decided that only love could exist between the genders?  I think she needs to study the history of the “rule book” she’s playing with.

It’s not our job to fit into anyone’s “idea of normalcy”, straight or gay. As fir this woman, nit only us she ignorant in her beliefs, the bible nowhere (not once, anywhere) mentions same sex marriage, it definitely condemns to death ANY woman who has had sex before marriage, but I can assure you not only has she signed hundreds (thousands?) of such certificates, she most likely has never even cared to ask about it. No ones tax dollars should pay for this kind of ignorance or hypocrisy. Her “beliefs” are that contrary to actual biblical teachings she chooses to be a bigot.

  • I don’t see what the big deal is. Better that she resigns from a job she doesn’t feel she can do, than to screw up other people’s lives because she doesn’t support gay marriage. It’s a responsible decision, and I respect it a lot more than someone with a similar mindset staying in the job, and doing everything they can to make getting a marriage license more difficult for a gay couple.

  • AMEN!!! People if you want acceptance you need to accept they have their own beliefs. They are not wrong and neither are we. Shut up with all the negativity and lets continue our porcess of getting recognized for the positive things we do not the nastiness that spews from some bitter queens mouth.

  • Bye bye Ms. Fotusky.  Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.  And as to Mr. McGuire’s comments that there should be exemptions for STATE employees um, no.  Sorry.  My tax dollars pay your salary.  You are not in the private sector therefore I will not pay for you to be exempt from what is basically a non-discrimination policy.

  • she resigned so she’s wouldn’t be eligible for it.

  • Kristine Wilenski

Does she realize women were not valued in her book as well? Or did she just skip past that part when she pick and chose.
