Oscar-winning director and writer Dustin Lance Black is a signed model and he is citing Donald Trump as part of the cause.
“In a time when too many are using our differences to divide us, I want to help lift our differences up as what make us magnificent, what make us powerful,” Black told the Hollywood Reporter. “Fashion has the potential to help our individuality roar, and right now, we must use every tool in our arsenal to amplify that roar.”
Black has nabbed a deal with Wilhelmina Models, the same agency that represents Nicki Minaj, Shawn Mendes, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas.
“Dustin Lance Black is a true visionary talent. He uses his artistry, voice and talent to give voice to individuals and ideas who need to be heard,” added Wilhelmina CEO Bill Wackermann.
Black most recently created When We Rise, a seven-part miniseries that chronicled the history of the LGBT rights movement, from its origins in San Francisco to present day.
After the film came under scrutiny for not properly representing the entire LGBTQ community, Black fired back. “In no way does it claim to be the testament of us. It is a testament, a slice,” Black told Party Foul Radio. “There are still a variety – a wide variety – of people who aren’t depicted in When We Rise and need depicted in more of our stories!”
“To anyone who says, ‘Hey, I didn’t see me represented in When We Rise,’ and they’re angry about that, I say, ‘Good! Get angry, and get writing!’” Black countered.
“I can’t do it all – and I shouldn’t do it all,” he continued. “I’m hoping anyone who feels they’re still missing their piece of our history gets to work! If they need any pointers, I’m happy to help.”
