Dutch Gay Couple Attacked with Bolt Cutters in Horrifying Hate Crime

In a horrifying hate crime, a gay couple in the Netherlands were attacked by a vicious group of men and youths with bolt cutters.

NL Times writes that Jasper Vernes-Sewratan and Ronnie Sewratan-Vernes were holding hands and walking home from a dance party in Arnhem early on Sunday. The couple claim they don’t usually hold hands in public, but they were alone and it was dark.

But as they were crossing the Nelson Mandela Bridge, the pair were accosted by a group of six to eight men.

Jasper told RTL Nieuws, “I think they were Moroccans. They began to shout: disgusting, dirty, homo, such things. We shouted something back and walked on, but all of a sudden they came after us.”

Tensions escalated into a shoving match, according to a post Jasper later wrote on Facebook.

Then, Jasper said, he saw a man pulling a pair of bolt cutters out of his jacket, and he heard his partner screaming that his teeth had been knocked out.

The couple managed to call an ambulance and were taken to the hospital, where doctors reattached Ronnie’s lip.

Jasper later posted about the event on Facebook:

He wrote:

[Ronnie’s] upper lip has one laceration, and he has lost 4 front teeth and partly a 5th tooth from the cutters, the lip is now in the hospital but the teeth are a bigger problem and need to be reset.

What a nice date night was has become a nightmare.

That this can still happen in 2017 is incomprehensible and hard to understand because in the end, we are just Dutch in our own country, but it can’t be like that, apparently, because of homosexuality.

Dutch police have arrested a 20 year-old man and a 14 year-old boy in connection with the incident, but the other attackers are still at large.
