Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has betrayed his campaign promise to support the legalization of same-sex marriage.
Before his election, Duterte thrilled progressives by claiming that he would push for legislation to permit same-sex marriage.
But post-election, he’s saying something else. The New York Times reports that Duterte spoke of other nations’ acceptance of LGBTQ identity and said, “That is their culture. That’s for them. That can’t apply to us, because we are Catholics.”
He also spoke out against gender transitioning, saying, “Wherever God has placed you, stay there.”
Duterte went on to add that he’s totally not homophobic though, because some of his relatives are gay.
