Seattle’s Mayor Accused of Sexually Abusing Teen Boy in the 1980s

Posted on

A new lawsuit alleges that Seattle’s openly gay mayor sexually abused a troubled teen in the mid 1980s.

The Seattle Times reports that a 46 year-old Kent man who goes by the initials D.H. filed a lawsuit against Seattle Mayor Ed Murray on Thursday seeking damages for child sex abuse and illegal child prostitution.

The suit alleges that Murray “raped and molested D.H. when he was legally unable to consent.” The plaintiff claims that in 1986, when D.H. was a 15 year-old high school dropout addicted to crack-cocaine, Murray, then 32, propositioned him for sex in exchange for money (“as little as $10-20”).

“I have been dealing with this for over 30 years,” D.H. told the Seattle Times. He added that coming forward was part of the “healing process.”

Murray, who is running for re-election this year, denies the allegations. His spokesman released the following statement:

These false accusations are intended to damage a prominent elected official who has been a defender of vulnerable populations for decades. It is not a coincidence that this shakedown effort comes within weeks of the campaign filing deadline. These unsubstantiated assertions, dating back three decades, are categorically false. Mayor Murray has never engaged in an inappropriate relationship with any minor. … Mayor Murray will vigorously fight these allegations in court.

But this isn’t the first time Murray has been accused of sexually abusing a minor. The Seattle Times writes:

Two men, Jeff Simpson and Lloyd Anderson, said they knew Murray when they were growing up in a Portland center for troubled children, and later as teenagers. They accuse Murray of abusing them in the 1980s when he was in his 20s. Simpson made the claim as a teen in 1984, and talked with a social worker and detective at the time. No charges were filed.

Ed Murray made headlines for being Seattle’s first openly gay mayor. He’s married, too, to First Gentleman Michael Shiosaki.
