RuPaul Rules the World on the Most Recent Episode of HBO’s ‘Animals’

HBO’s animated series Animals had its first (and only?) live-action episode this weekend. While the series normally features city-dwelling animals telling slice-of-life stories in limited animation, this week’s episode featured no animals at all. What it did feature, however, was RuPaul cast in the lead as the season’s villain.

Each episode of Animals opens and closes with a look at what the humans are doing in the background. Season 1’s human storyline involved the rise and fall of New York’s corrupt mayor, culminating at a disastrous Thanksgiving Day parade. Season 2’s storyline, however, is on a much-wider scale.

In this episode, unsurprisingly titled “Humans,” RuPaul plays Dr. Labcoat, the evil head of Pesci Co. Pesci Co. is responsible for most of the consumer products used by the humans in Animals, from soda to industrial chemicals. Unfortunately for the world, Pesci Co. is also behind the mysterious Virus X — a man-made disease ravaging New York. But they also have a cure ready to go — The Green Pill.

RuPaul’s not the only star to show up in this episode. The hilarious comedian John Early appears as Dr. Labcoat’s assistant, the comedy team Wild Horses (featuring Lauren Lapkus and Stephanie Allynne) are Pesci Co. chemists and gay porn star Chris Baldwin runs Pesci Co.’s advertising agency — fully nude. Other stars include Rick & Morty co-creator Dan Harmon, Archer‘s Judy Greer, Andy Richter and Raven-Symoné.

Celebrity cameos are the stock and trade of Animals. Every episode has famous voices giving life to the animated characters; so far, we’ve seen Wanda Sykes as a horse, Killer Mike and Big Boi were two rapping foxes, and Ty Segall’s played himself (as a squirrel).

It remains to be seen whether or not we’ll see more of RuPaul, but we’ve got our fingers crossed.

Animals airs on HBO Fridays at 11:30 p.m. and is available on the HBO Go and HBO Now apps.
