Ryan Raftery’s Anna Wintour Musical Returns for a Good Cause

Posted on

Want to own a piece of Anna Wintour? This may be your chance.

Ryan Raftery is bringing his one-man show “Ryan Raftery is the Most Powerful Woman in Fashion – The Anna Wintour Musical” back to New York City for a limited engagement on April 27 and 28.

Word of Raftery’s good deed somehow got to the Vogue editor herself, and Wintour is helping him raise funds for the good causes. A pair of her sunglasses were donated to Raftery’s auction happening in tandem with his show. Wintour’s sunglasses joins a few other items including a $1,000 gift card for Bergdorf Goodman’s that includes lunch and champagne for two.

One of our 100 intriguing LGBTs to look out for this year, we recently caught up with Raftery to find out how he acquired the coveted pair of Chanels. He told us how Trump inspires him, the good causes he is helping and if he thinks Wintour will make an appearance.

A gay boy can dream, right?

Why are you bringing Anna back?

To be honest, I never thought I’d do the show in NYC again. The press response the first time around was so massive – more than I could have ever dreamed of – that the idea of doing it again in New York didn’t seem to make any sense! Out of all of my shows to date, this is the one people have responded to in the biggest way. As I’ve toured the show around the country, lots of people kept asking when I would bring her home to New York.

I wasn’t interested at all until the day I heard that the Trump administration would roll back the bathroom policy protections for transgender students in our country’s schools. It really hit me on a gut level and I wanted to do something to raise money for an organization that helps LGBTQ youth and thought that bringing this show back was an excellent opportunity to do just that.

What is this about Anna giving you a pair of sunglasses for the auction? How did that happen?

I am literally not allowed to talk about it. Sorry to be so cryptic, but… I’m not allowed to talk about it. It’s very cool that she is doing it, though. The auction starts at 10:00 am on April 24th on eBay and I hope it raises a ton of money. They’re arguably the most famous sunglasses in the world!

How has your perception of yourself as an artist changed after Trump?

It hasn’t really. I’ve always thought of myself as a great distraction. I realize that by definition I am an artist, and I always try to say something with my work, but more than anything I want to make you laugh. Make you forget the world you knew five seconds before the curtain goes up and awaits you five seconds after it comes down. If I can do that, I’m happy.

Why did you choose these organizations to partner with?

The work The Trevor Project does is so very important. There are LGBTQ youth out there that have no one to talk to. Knowing that these kids have a place to turn is very important to me.

I know Martha is next. How is that going?

I’ve never been more fascinated by a subject. I’ve been researching her for seven months now and I never get bored. Musicalizing moments from her life is going to be very exciting onstage. Everything you could possibly want to see is in the show, but I’m definitely trying to go deeper in this script than I ever have before. To show the audience how Martha became the brand she is today. It’s a lot of life to pack into 85 minutes.

I’m learning to play the guitar right now so that I can shred on a Metallica song for the moment Martha gets out of prison and attempts to reclaim her throne. And yes, I already own that famous poncho.

Do you think Anna will be there this time? Or are her sunglasses enough?

Well, the Met Ball is the following Monday after my shows, so the odds are slim. But you never know.
