The gay/bi internet collectively creamed its panties and manties this last week when 24-year-old shirtless jogger Ethan Renoe did an impromptu interview with Chicago TV station WGN while running out in the uncharacteristically 60-degree weather. Turns out that Renoe — in all his muscley, bearded glory — once worked with a group called Free Prayers Chicago, a group that spends its time standing outside of gay bars in Chicago’s Boystown, offering free prayers to help save homosexuals from their empty, sex-obsessed lives. HAWT!

Renoe is a former student at the Moody Bible Institute — a fully-accredited Bible school that believes that the Bible is the word of God (uh-oh). Years before he appeared all shirtless and wet on WGN to announce that he was single, Renoe appeared in a promotional video alongside Free Prayers Chicago co-founder Carson Lee. Lee said that while the Free Prayers people preached on the streets…

“People come in and you can just smell the emptiness on them, the desire to have something more fulfilling than the way they’re living their life. They’re either obsessed with their jobs, or obsessed with sex, or obsessed with money, or drinking.”

While the video doesn’t specifically mention gays and the group reportedly offers its free prayers all around Chicago (not just the gay part), the only mentions of gayness at the Moody Bible College website are a feature story about a student-turned-Moody-professor who came out as gay, got into drugs, dropped out of dental school and got HIV before “pursuing a doctorate… in the area of sexuality and celibacy” and the Student Life Guide which says:

“We conclude that nonmarital sex, homosexual sex, same-sex romantic relationships, and transgender expressions are deviations from God’s standard, misrepresenting the nature of God Himself. As such, these are wrong under any circumstances in God’s eyes.”

Oh well. Maybe Renfoe has turned away from his anti-gay schooling, and is now single, hunky and ready to mingle. Maaaaaaaaybe.

To any young, confused Christians reading out there, remember: “There is a way out! You don’t have to go to heaven, y’know. Would you like to be saved?”
