We Love Rihanna Even More For Helping A Gay Fan Come Out

Why we’re covering this: We slam celebs for spouting queerphobia and praise them for expressing queerphilia.

An anonymous Rihanna fan recently told Buzzfeed that the pop-star has been helping him come out of the closet with encouraging messages of support. We already liked her emotionally raw songs, but these messages are showing the kind and loving heart behind them in a way we never imagined.

We imagine most pop-stars would be too busy touring, rehearsing and generally being fabulous to take the time to console and follow-up with a young person going through a hard time. It’s important too as lesbian, gay and bisexual youth are three times more likely to commit suicide than their straight peers.

Turns out that, Rihanna has also been a vocal supporter of LGBT rights in general. She even spoke out against Indiana’s anti-LGBT religious laws during an Indianapolis music festival in 2015. The Huffington Post reports:

Who’s feeling these new bullshit laws they’re trying to pass over here? I said, ‘Fuck that shit,’” Rihanna yelled, before getting the crowd involved. “I wanna hear you say, ‘Fuck that shit.’ ‘Cause we’re just living our motherfucking lives. Indiana!”

Rihanna herself has openly embraced sexual ambiguity in her own work, often taking on male stereotypes, kink-chic and openly flirting with lesbian-eroticism. In fact, the lesbian, bi and trans-women site Autostraddle even did a top 10 of her most lesbian videos.

“Being who you are is the only way.” We couldn’t have said it any better, RiRi.
